New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I need to go to Walmart just so I can walk, but I’m afraid I would see something I want, like chocolate, or pumpkin and whipped cream, but I’d probably be better off staying home.

One of the gals from the church is going to take me to my procedure on Tuesday, next week, and I will see if she will take me to the pain clinic for my prescription, since the clinic is only about a mile from the surgical center. That way, I don’t have to worry about gas. Though I should probably offer to pay her for the gas she uses to be my chauffeur for the morning. Either in actual money or some lunch. With luck, my deposit will be in.

The bed is made, and I’ve had lunch, but I don’t know how long I’ll be able to hang in before I have to just give up and go to bed. It would be nice to watch a movie...

Running around like crazy today. We’re going to Raleigh tomorrow, so I have dozen things to do to get ready, and we also have Sunday School and Scouts.

Right now I’m working on the song page for next Sunday; the words have to be to Don Fabio before the end of day tomorrow.

Huyen las tinieblas al ver cuatro llamas resplandecer.

Looks to be about 4 inches of the stuff on the ground. The radar last night looked like it wouldn’t hit down in the southern climes of New Jersey and NYC..

They are still insisting we have more to come but right now it isn’t falling. Radar does show a large blob of snowstuff to the northwest and rotating such that it could hit us. Binghamton, Rochester, Syracuse, Scranton and points in between are in it.

Temp is 36 but with the wind they say it feels like 19. So far I have avoided venturing out into it.

I’m always singing that song, especially when the weather is cold. When I get cold, I get stupid.

Suddenly, I’m tired. I think I’ll fill up my water jug and disappear into the catacombs of the bedroom. The weather is not being nice to me, so I’m going to give in and read.

I’ll see all y’all in the morning!

They are cute, but I think I prefer the flaming llama.

I am also wondering if I should take the free alpaca. Never had much luck with free animals. Except for cats. My cats have all been free.

It is my understanding that alpacas have sweet personalities.

When we lived in Central PA I once saw a man walking 2 Alpaca on leashes around Children’s Lake.

I didn’t think to ask him if they were easy to care for. They seemed to behave well on the leash.

Morning.

As far as it still is from Friday it’s a sort-of Friday for me. We’re traveling tonight and will be at the in-laws tomorrow and Thursday. I might be back at work on Friday, depending on traffic.

Oh, what a bunch of squee!! They all look sweet and cuddly — until they start to play and grow up. Still, I like Siamese and think the Blue Points are especially pretty.

47 degrees, 58%, mostly clear, SE @ 2 mph

Oh, my. I just yawned! WHY? The wind feels cold, and even though it’s only 2 mph, it feels about twice that, when it blows through my jacket.

For only costing $3, the little motion detector light has paid for itself several times. I still don’t understand why I didn’t think of it sooner.
