New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Well, I finished my 12 hours training people to do a software development project. Now to drive back to NYC and drop off the rental car and get a train into Manhattan so I can go to work tomorrow.

Ugh, now I’m tired.

On the up side, I’m somewhere near Crayola world. Maybe I’ll drop in some day. They’re supposed to have some interesting things to do and look at and such.

Good luck getting through tomorrow! Does your job slow down for the week of Thanksgiving?

Thanks,

The job doesn’t really slow down, but it does take 2 days off.

I’ll take 3.

But people will still make trash.

I’ve always had crayons and coloring books.

Well, we had those things too. Sort of. But I had (still have actually) two sisters. None of us ever had a full set of crayons.

We, umm, 'shared'.. ;-)

True, but I don’t need to invite the cute little killer into my home, feed it, take care of it, pay massive veterinary bills and love it, just so that it could turn around and kill me if given the opportunity ;o)

Well.. To clarify things there ARE crayons in the house. Because grandkids. (We have no play doh or coloring books for sensitive snowflakes that are Trumphurt though.)

Defining the term ‘full set’ is an improbability since the ‘set’ that is in residence here has long ago lost any container(s) that originally packaged them. They are now housed in a gallon ziplock bag that is about half full. (So instead of a set we have two quarts of crayons..) Most are shorter than original length - many in various length sections of their former self. This of course allows each Grandkid to have a blue crayon. Or whatever.

Certain colours could no longer be available due to the users preference of leaving them on floors, chairs, and tables where they fall victim to ‘cleaning’..

And in keeping with family tradition, none of then have a full set of crayons. ;-)

None of us has a full set of marbles ;-). We keep our crayons and parts-of in a gallon plastic tub. We have many nice coloring books from Dover, from which we copy pictures for the actual use of the Offspring, as well as the $1 ones from Walmart for Kathleen.

Speaking of cute little killers, another New Cat has appeared.

Youngest Granddaughter has been telling us that she has seen a ‘yellow kitty’ but none of us have seen it. Until today. Mrs. NoC looked out the window to espy The Smudge at warp speed leaving the East field heading toward the house.

With a butterscotch feline in pursuit.

I asked if this was the same longhaired orange tom that we haven’t seen since the late Sooty beat him up for control of the territory and she said that it was a shorthair so no.. If it has been around long enough to be sighted multiple times by Youngest Grandaughter it can be assumed that this cat knows how to survive outdoors amid the ravenous beasties and quasi-canines that roam through (since the last one that appeared only was seen once and then not again - unless the piece of paw and tail of the appropriate color count as a sighting.)

The presence of New Cat could also explain what seemed on several occasions to be the sounds of a cat fight off in the general direction of that East field since Thomas Tom Cat (son of the late Sooty and Smokey) is now our resident feral and so far has defended his territory - which includes that field. It also might explain what critter one of our in-outdoor cats keeps getting beat up by. Thom Tom Cat generally ignores all three of them - maybe he knows they are both eunuchs and their mother is post-operative menopausal..

But wait!

There’s more..

Son#2 insists that on several occasions when he has returned from work there has been a bobcat out by the barn..

(Which is entirely believable in this area.)

I’ll take it! Squee! Marmalade!

Galileo says it is 68 degrees in here, but the weather prevaricator says it’s 42 “out there,” and no wind, finally, and I can hardly wait for the bathroom to heat up so I can take a shower and get my blood moving.

This must be Friday, finally. This has been such a slow week, for some reason. I sat out with the peeps for about 40 minutes yesterday, and decided whatever came in the mail wasn’t worth freezing in the wind, so we all went home.

I’m pretty happy about being able to get so much done this week. I hope I don’t pay for it for the next four days. (When I do stuff like that every day, or take a trip, it takes about three days for it all to come back and smack me up side the head and lay me low for the next week.)

We all laughed yesterday when I said I would be gone for a week, and how would they survive without me? One suggested I text or call during that time so I can join in. But I guess you had to be there to laugh about it... ;o]

There’s always Pat. He seems to show up about the time you send a first post to me.

The shower is done. Now I have to have a breathing treatment to start the day with no worries. ;o]
