New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

One of my nieces got a bottle of red wine at the winery in Pahrump, and stored it upright in the fridge. She went to open it and the cork crumbled. Guess what came out? Not wine, for sure. She had paid $40 for that bottle.

I will get a beef roast, soon, because I want to make sure I get some use out of the wine. But it won’t be today.

Those kittehs look like the ones that are roaming around here. The owner seems to think they will be OK, but the place is a frequent hunting ground for coyotes. Those little tiny kittehs would be nothing more than a snack for a coyote, and could eat three of them at a sitting. Not to mention her little nervous rat of a dog and the kittehs’ mum.

I just don’t understand people...they know coyotes are around here, daily, and yet, the folks let their pets out unsupervised and unleashed. Not good.

Good morning. My cats are outside, hoping something will let them catch it. We are not prowled by coyotes, however.

I just sorted the clothes and now I’m out of breath and my back is trying to go into spasms.

The wind that was supposed to quit last night around 2100 is still going strong.

64, Clear, SW @ 14 mph, 49%

I was hoping my SSA check would be in, but it isn’t. That’s just as well, as I didn’t want to try and squeeze in a trip to Wally’s this morning, though I would have.

(Waking up at 0300 is for the birds.)

Last evening, Greg called me outside and said Jim, the Hypocrite was really angry at me for putting a nasty note on his car.

Jim finally came over and I told him I didn’t write the letter (Greg said Shirley confessed to it) and that I didn’t have time to spread rumors about anyone. He wanted to know what I was going to do about it because it “besmirched” my reputation. I told him “nothing, because none of it is true.”

“But your reputation is at stake!” “My reputation is always at stake, and I’m not going to react to the rumors because all that will do is perpetuate them.”

So after I get back from voting, I will tell the peeps about the “excitement” of last night. Ha-ha.

In the meantime, I told Greg that Shirley may be having problems none of us know anything about, and that I will continue to forgive her and ask the Lord to forgive her. It’s all I can do.

And now, I’m going to wash clothes.

Tom came back. His class was cancelled without notice. Now he’s going to take Elen to school. I’m going to start trying to get something done about the van now.

I just got back from opening up. I went up at 0545, and before I could leave, Zeke came in, closely followed by James the drunk.

I told them of the stuff going on yesterday, and they were as perplexed as I was. Still, I’m not going to get upset about it all. There’s no sense in that.

So. Happy Halloween, everyone!

I'd be perplexed, too. Just write it off as someone being nutty.

The guys from the towing company came, and they started the van. They said the battery is dead. I drove it to the mechanic, and he's going to look at it and call me back in a bit. Tom came in the car, and I bought him gas at the Exxon and pie at the Walmart. Now we're Pending as we wait for news of the van.

I'll leave about 12:30 for Kathleen's riding lesson, in some vehicle or other.

I will leave in a few minutes for Albertson’s where there is early voting. I may wander over to the other side of the store and see if the donuts look good enough to eat.

It seems odd that the battery would die. Is it an old one? If not, there may be a short somewhere in the electrical system that is draining it.

The battery was from 2009. The mechanic checked out all the electrical components as well as replacing the battery. I’m at Kathleen’s riding lesson now.

Wow. That’s long time for a battery to last. The most we can get here is three years. The heat kills them.

The peeps had an impromptu picnic today, with KFC bought by Chuck, who was celebrating the fact that his doctor said he wasn’t going to die tomorrow.

I had two pieces, a small mound of potatoes and a very large helping a slaw. And now, I wish I hadn’t eaten! But I was also reminded of the fact that I really like KFC chicken!
