New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I ditched the lipitor some years ago when my legs started hurting. Taking niacin now.

Of course the medical peoples advise otherwise but I look at it this way.. My Mother and her siblings all had high cholesterol levels and lived into their 90’s (Mom didn’t quite make it to 90 - 89 actually - but no heart issues, it was the other family issue colon CA that got her, her one Sister, and her Father).

On the other hand, on my Father’s side the males seem to drop dead with a massive MI between age 67 and 74..

I made it past the low end. In about five more years I’ll know which side my inheritance came from. ;-)

Either way, I’m not Home yet.

And the sun is again shining and the radar indicates that the thundrous storm and its fluid deposits are now east of us.

Of course, humidity is now 90%...

DP reads a lot about medical issues, and he says there’s very little solid evidence that cholesterol causes heart problems. Even the correlation isn’t entirely inarguable.

However, the side effects of the drugs are significant and well documented.

There were no cholesterol checks when my dad was alive, and not much news about it when my mother was alive, either.

It doesn’t matter, because I’ve never been bothered with anything cholesterol-related. In fact doctors are shocked because my veins are so clean and yet I had a history of angina. My lungs are compromised, beginning with pertussis as a toddler, asthma as a teen, 20 years of smoking (GACK!) Valley Fever and exposure to asbestos.

With breathing treatments, I’ve almost eliminated angina. I don’t intend to die any time soon!

I think a lot of medications to more harm than good, so I stay away from them. ;o]

Wow. My brain is beginning to smell funny. I think I need to go to bed and leave the brainy stuff to the experts.

See all y’all in the morning!

Great, just great. Just what we needed, huge wind borne algae strands all across the country.

And what follows algae? Why bottom feeders. Like we don’t have more than enough as is.

It’s not just algae, its Fortnum and Masons Algae.

Evening, folks. We’re going to the gym soon.

Sally has a doctor appointment tomorrow afternoon, and I forgot that, with Pat and James at camp, I’d have nobody at home older than Vlad (10). Fortunately, one of Elen’s friends is able to babysit.

It seems like this sort of thing happened during Boy Scout camp last year, too.

By the calendar, it’s June 21 to September 22, or thereabouts. By the climate ... depends on where you are. Most of the year in South Texas.

Ah well then, Fortnum and Mason handpicked algae blooms and tenderly cradled in fine bone china bento boxes for your next picnic.

Specify green or red algae blooms that we may suggest the appropriate wine for the ultimate al fresco dining experience.

Hmmm, I think red algae with a nice sweet NewZealand white wine.
Plus Blue-Green algae on a bed of fermented rice with a light red sauce drizzled over the top.

beginning with pertussis as a toddler,

Pertussis is so - modern.

I just had plain old whooping cough. ;-)

Followed some years later by mumps, measles, and chicken pox all in the same school year. My brain is saying it was when I was in fourth grade but that factoid is an iffy memory. The dating that is, not the 'all in the same year' thing. ;-)
