Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.
Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)
"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."
...
The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).
The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).
"There it was on the screen this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

It’s always amazing to me how quickly time passes. It seems like only yesterday was September... ;o]
We’re only supposed to get up to 90 today, but 75 tomorrow. Brr-r-r-r-r!
I hope your voice improves. I’m sorry that the cold affected it so, as your voice is so beautiful.
Time to go up and unlock. Someone else makes the coffee. That stuff is so vile, I would never want my name associated with it!
Also, never confuse simple with easy...
It’s a warm day here ... 80s already. I’m wearing my sun hat and sunscreen!
Wow. I must have dropped the ball, somewhere. I’m sorry.
I was very sleepy, but decided to go out and sit with the peeps for a while. Even so, it was hard to stay awake. I was up a little after 0300 again this morning, so sleepy is what the day is like.
Now I will eat a little pizza and then write to my grandson.
But I REALLY want to sleep!
Aftanoon. Got some sleep but got awakened because of a question about how reports work in the new system.
Ain't THAT the tooth. I've taken to saying, "straighforward, non-trivial" instead of "easy" when something isn't tricky, but takes time or effort.
Very nippy here. Not quite cold. My beeber says it’s 64 out there.
Simple is a liberal.
Easy is a liberal chick..
I’m gonna wander out into the wilds of FR and see what the conspiracy theories are about Assange’s latest announcement.
Quieter than I thought. So, back to the Flying Castle library for a quiet Sunday afternoon.
Very warm and sunny this afternoon, but it was cold in the church.
Scrubbing dragons with a toothbrush is one of the weirder things I do in this job. Santana is feeling much better, though. He got very angry and snapped his jaws at me: usually he doesn’t have that much energy.
Sally is feeding grubs to Jack out in the truck bed, now.
That’s no fun..
I’m engaged in some assorted busy work indoors so I haven’t roamed the FR perimeter. I haven’t even logged into Facepagething to poke the liberals who decided to ‘friend’ me..
I’ll get to that later. ;-)
It’s 62 degrees and spongy outdoors. (Clay gets that way when it’s wet. Colloidal suspensions are none too stable for walking purposes under these conditions.)
I recently read two books set in early 18th century China, 1705 or so. The Chinese Empire was trying to take over Tibet, what’s new.
If I remember, in 1705 there was a big influx of illegal aliens in North America, too. The natives were concerned about losing their culture.
True, true ... and look how that turned out! Some of the characters in these mysteries (of which there are only two, so far) are Catholic religious: Jesuits, Dominicans, Franciscans. They were wandering the forests of North America at the same time as they were frisking about the Himalayas, especially the Jesuits.
The Jesuit archives are amazing. If I didn’t have to cook, clean, teach, sing, and wash children and dragons, there would be a lot to read.
Windy and warm. The A/C is still cycling, even in October. The filter needs to be replaced, but it will have to wait until next month. It’s still blowing the neighbor’s cigarette smoke, but I will have to deal with it, I guess.
I just transferred all my files to the slave, as it has been nagging at me for a while. The way this thing shuts down with no warning, I don’t want to take a chance of losing what I have.
I just finished my letter to my grandson, and even though I took a 40 minute nap, I’m still very sleepy. But I guess that’s better than the way I felt yesterday. But I think I’m not out of the woods, yet.
I’m very glad I ate about an hour ago, long before the dragon information... :o|
While I’m listening to the Conference, I may try to write in my journal. Maybe.
Just discovered that Tom, Elen, and Bill left for Mass without taking the collection envelopes. *sigh* I’ll be over there tomorrow for Scouts and can leave them, but I swear I put them in Elen’s hand. I don’t know what happened!
Anoreth says she got knocked down in a club and has a concussion.
I feel the same way, with the exceptions of cleaning and teaching children. I have to worry about keeping the wackier old folks from killing each other. I've tried to get as many history books as possible about other parts of the world.
I don't think Zeke's car is working, so I will try again to find someone to take me for the postponed procedure. I DO want it done before I move. I don't know how long it will take me to get all my medical in place.
Elen’s hand just probably arbitrarily dropped the collection envelopes when she wasn’t looking.
Oh fer cryin’ out loud! I hope Anoreth is OK, and that it’s a mild concussion, though none of them leave us the way we were before we got them.
Too bad about Zeke’s car!
When we unloaded our music stuff at church this afternoon, I found a bag of groceries that had been there for several days. Very annoying! No wonder we didn’t have any sandwich meat ...
