New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit
space.com ^ | 07/11/2016

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I can’t believe I wasted post 2468 with that.

Wouldn't describe it as wasted...It caused a loud laugh this end.
Underutilised, maybe ,but wasted, no. :)

The Rum Tum Tugger by T. S. Eliot

The Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat:
If you offer him pheasant he would rather have grouse.
If you put him in a house he would much prefer a flat,
If you put him in a flat then he'd rather have a house.
If you set him on a mouse then he only wants a rat,
If you set him on a rat then he'd rather chase a mouse.
Yes the Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat—
And there isn't any call for me to shout it:
For he will do
As he do do
And there's no doing anything about it!

The Rum Tum Tugger is a terrible bore:
When you let him in, then he wants to be out;
He's always on the wrong side of every door,
And as soon as he's at home, then he'd like to get about.
He likes to lie in the bureau drawer,
But he makes such a fuss if he can't get out.

Yes the Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat—
And there isn't any use for you to doubt it:
For he will do
As he do do
And there's no doing anything about it!

The Rum Tum Tugger is a curious beast:
His disobliging ways are a matter of habit.
If you offer him fish then he always wants a feast;
When there isn't any fish then he won't eat rabbit.
If you offer him cream then he sniffs and sneers,
For he only likes what he finds for himself;

So you'll catch him in it right up to the ears,
If you put it away on the larder shelf.
The Rum Tum Tugger is artful and knowing,
The Rum Tum Tugger doesn't care for a cuddle;
But he'll leap on your lap in the middle of your sewing,
For there's nothing he enjoys like a horrible muddle.
Yes the Rum Tum Tugger is a Curious Cat—
And there isn't any need for me to spout it:
For he will do
As he do do
And theres no doing anything about it!

It was bouncing around like a fly in a window, so I let it out.

Just don’t go to Macy’s, shop at Pet Smart, or bank at Bank of America.

And turn the cell phone off until you’re out of the park.. ;-)

Back in the middle ages books were painstakingly hand printed one letter at time by monks with pens using lead based black ink.

Since the monks were of the habit of pointing their brushes by twirling them in their lips, many of them succumbed to lead poisoning.

A less toxic ink was developed by replacing the lead with zinc.

Of course, now we know it as ‘printer’s zinc’...

SQUEE! I have always loved Persian cats.

This one is really pretty...all the same color, including the eyes. Interesting.

Good morning. My mom’s Polly is a Persian mix. She has the flattened nose and big, offended eyes.

Shannon caught a hummingbird this morning. I heard her making an angry sound outside, and when I went to see what it was, I saw she had something in her mouth. It flew off when DP and Sally pried Shannon’s jaw open.

I’m glad the hummingbird was rescued! Shannon will probably run with her prey in the future, to avoid release of her plaything.

Yesterday, I saw a hugh roach (we usually get them just before pest control is due) and I kicked it towards the door. The light was low in here because all that was on was the deck lamp right over the laptop.

Later in the morning, I decided to sweep up the last gift of leaves that the wind gave me, and decided to fix the doormat as well, since one of the end caps came off. As I went to sweep the roach from the threshold, it didn’t move like most roaches and in the full light of day, looked rather odd and curled up somewhat. What a laugh! It was a little purple feather from the dream catcher you gave me! LOL!

Overcast again today, though at the moment, it’s only 77 with about 2 mph of breeze from the SE. I need to go take a shower and start the day for real. All that overcast is going to hold the smoke in, and I hate that.

Much better than having an actual roach!

You’re right (or in redneck country ‘your right’), a good laugh is never wasted.

3, 5, 7, 9! Mindless libtards get in line.

I hear that all the time at the protests here.

I have plenty of those because my immediate neighbor won’t allow pest control in because of her dog, so I have to periodically spray the common wall at he baseboards.

In Gt Lakes, when we were stationed there, we lived in the very last apartment in a ten-unit building. We had a terrible roach problem there. Come to find out, there was a Buddhist living in one apartment, and the Navy, in its wisdom, refused to spray ANY of the apartments. So I was spraying every few months on my own, because I had a babe in arms.

Since then, I have taken an instant dislike to people who choose to live with bugs. *shudder*

Back from yet another trip to Walmart. Today I saw the old man who carries a conure on his shoulder. Speaking of pets.

I also took my contributions for the law enforcement appreciation event organized by the social committee of a nearby subdivision. Among other items, I got each of my three assigned deputy sheriffs a $10 iTunes card. Since the cards came in a pack of 4, I had one left. I gave it to Elen, and she made me CDs of the “Hamilton” soundtrack, which she had already bought for $20, so now I own half of it, as it were.

In a little while, I’ll go pick Elen up at school, and then I’ll put Kathleen to bed, and then I will leave on my vacation to Mint Hill.
