New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Further news on the Upnorth people: they have a basset hound. On our first trip around the block, I saw a face looking out through a gap in the fence, and thought, “That looks a little like a basset.” On our third (and final) trip, another neighbor was walking her dog along the sidewalk, and the Upnorth dog let out a deep, “How-woof!” and I said, “Yep, it’s a basset.”

I caught it, but I couldn’t think of a good Humor to go with it, so I left it for someone with a sharper edge.

LoL, not quite that drastic.
More the inability to get in to the car because of where mine is parked.
They soon learn.

Here in NYC they ticket improperly parked cars to the tune of $65 and up. It’s not nearly enough for most people. I’ve suggested the FEL approach several times to Herr de Blasio but he hasn’t responded.

A Basset Hound....things are looking up.
The Snow shovel can be over looked if they’ve got a Basset Hound.

Doesn’t like the FEL concept ,eh? What a looser. :)

This isn’t in the street....
It’s on my property.
They just need gentle training.

Basset hounds will be all over the neighborhood, following scent trails, and they are too strong to stop with a lead. A friend of mine had a pair of them years ago, and they RAN all over the place, with no regard for property lines. (Of course!) And dug up LOTS of yards and gardens, searching for...what? Basset hound prey, whatever that is.

As in this shady tree mechanic is shortly to become a member of the Epic Fail Automotive Service, and if his fuel lines are in the same condition as the battery, a gold card customer of Acme Products.

Well, at least we don’t have to worry about the basset’s attacking a child.

Speaking of pets, as we were getting ready to go to the library, we saw a cat hustling across the street (away from us) with a dead animal in its mouth. It could be that this is the guest predator who left us three dead rabbits. (Only Jake knows for sure, and he said Mao.)

Ah, yes, the Epic Fail Automotive Service. That’s what Tom will be after one semester of diesel mechanics! (If he completes two semesters and OJT, he can be Reasonably Successful Automotive Service.

Speaking of EF, their lawn division needs to run the weedeater.

Obviously, Jake was naming the perp...

But as for the basset’s, I believe I would be more worried that the bassets were going to tear up my flowers in search of something. Jake, Shannon and Mao may have some competition in the critter hunt.

Ah, good insight! The neighbor’s house has much better gardening than ours. Basset-excavation might be an improvement.

Somehow reminded me of that old joke:

It was so hot yesterday that I saw a dog chasing a cat across the street.

And they were both walking.
