New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

Considering I’ve always been full of hot air you’d think I would have been.

We haz severe thundrous stormthings warnings until 1900 hrs.

The radar display shows a line passing through, but it seems that it has split with half now impacting Sussex, Morris, Passaic, and Bergen Counties in NY and the northern half passing north of us by maybe five-ish miles.

We’re getting rain that started as I was typing this, but no blowing thundering flashing windy-ing stuff..

At least not right now.

Hi DC.

I got one of those warning thingies for Metropolis, too.

Doesn’t sound like anything is happening right now. But I’ve found it can flood in mid-town and we won’t notice down here.

And between preview and post there’s some thunder. Unless that was the 6 train going by.

More Stripes will tell Fewer Stripes to fix it, is generally how it goes. Fewer Stripes, in turn, will tell Still Fewer Stripes to fix it, who, for his part, will tell Even Fewer Stripes to fix it. By the time One Stripe gets down to fixing it enough time and/or additional wear will have accumulated that the need for outright replacement may obviate the possibility of repair.

“Fancy meeting you here!”

Yeah. And then I show up, too.

All on the same day. Gotta be more careful; we could break something.

Howya, DC! I hope your life events are good! I’ve lost track of your children’s ages ... is Ana a teenager yet?

Well...

All that ‘you’re all gonna die thundrous stormthing’ that is (according to the radar-app) now impacting Lon Gisland and Albany managed to do here was raise the humidity level from ‘annoying’ to ‘oppressive’.

The next notch is ‘intolerable’..

Now if the current governor, Son of Former Emperor Cuomo, were to, by some stroke of providence, be smitten by a lightening bolt as the storm cleanses Albany, I will be deeply saddened.

For all of 3 nanoseconds..

I didn’t get to the wine today, though it is chilling in the fridge, but tomorrow is another day, and I may be able to relax with a glass then.

The morning will see me back at Jiffy Lube and the Circle K, trying to get done those things that escaped being done today.

There is good news, however. I’m getting some feeling back in my pinky finger, but it still buzzes like one of those handshake buzzers from years ago; still, I see that as progress. :o])

I do feel some rougher textures with it, so with time, I’m sure it will be almost completely healed. It is stiff, and I don’t have the full range of motion, but I’m doing PT with it on an almost daily basis.

I am so sorry, NoC: You seem to be getting the monsoons that are avoiding us — for now. However, we are still barely into July, so there are still 6-8 weeks, yet, for them to assault us.

(And, because we normally have single-digit humidity here, 15% is considered “intolerable.”)

Hope you have a good night! DP is going to take most of the kids to the gym, and I’m going to mop the floors.

"Technically, it's not "glass", it's a ceramic that passes a large quantity of the visible spectrum of light. It's refraction index is 1.75. Most glass, and other transparent media, fall between 1 and 2 on the index.

It melts around 2100oF, so it's not much more difficult to work with than say... welding high strength steel. Although, for obvious reasons, hammer forging it is out. 4 times stronger than silica glass only means you need a 4 lbs hammer to break it instead of the trusty 1 lbs..."

Initially, we were building our canopy with regular glass. AlON seemed so superior that switching to it was a no-brainer.

But, it still, as you allude, is not unbreakable. And since we have acres of transparent material to be concerned about, I devised a rather aggressive repair procedure.

Essentially, all of the panes are the same dimensions. This makes manufacture easier, but the main focus is interchangeability. The panels are equilateral triangle in shape, and have an odd configuration of hinge joints which allows a neighboring panel to wrap over and secure a damaged panel.

The outer layer is double-paned, with a lattice structure supporting an inner layer. The lattice structure is also tiled with AlON panels, hinged as described above. This allows supporting replacement panels to converge on any area of damage, to quickly mitigate air loss.

The double-wall structure minimizes damage to the supporting frame members, unless something really massive should impact, which hasn't happened yet.

The double framing also means that structural members can be disconnected from either the outer layer or the inner layer, (but not both), since a continuous membrane can be maintained on the other layer.

Work crews are standing by at all times, just as firefighters are continuously on call in other circumstances. It's an important function, since it protects the very air we breathe.

GULP! That’s quite a hole.
Not like the one on Hillary’s face, but respectable nonetheless.

Hey, you wanna have some REAL fun??

FROM A LANDLINE PHONE dial 206-823-3906.
When the guy answers, ask whether he’s with the IRS.
Ask how much you owe.
Ask how you can pay your debt now.
Tell him you want to resolve this as soon as possible.
You will be told payment can only be by EFT. (RED FLAG)
You will eventually be asked to provide a MOBILE number so they can direct you in real-time where to go to make payment.
BALK. DO NOT COMPLY.
Say you’ve got a lot to do.
Ask how far you’ll have to drive; “Just across town or farther?”
WASTE THIS PERSON’S TIME
MAKE THEM DECIDE TO HANG UP ON YOU.

Write down details as you speak to the person.
Submit those details to the Dept of the Treasury here:

Of course there’s nothing wrong with defining one-off models, even egregious ones. It’s the forced application that’s problematic — the politics of science.
