Initial reports from Dallas described multiple snipers with AR-15s #weaponsofwar. The ongoing propaganda theme among the tabloids is that the AR-15 has become the weapon of choice for terrorists and mass shooters. It turns out that the terrorist in Dallas question used an antique, the SKS, (according to CBS News) but the facts never keep the press from a good propaganda theme.
The SKS was designed in the 40s in Russia. It is such a basic rifle that it is legal in California with no modification. With its fixed ten round magazine, the SKS is everything that the gun haters in California say a rifle must be. It is not black, no pistol grip, no flash hider or folding stock. It even shoots a intermediate power cartridge, 7.63 X 39. It is used as a cheap hunting gun across the US. I am sure that at this moment, some law maker in California is writing new legislation to close the mad man with an antique rifle loophole.

“...the shooter had no prior arrests, making him eligible for a legal gun purchase...”
Well there ya have it. All legal gun purchasers who have no criminal intent will be guilty of “precrime” under new Obama command directed legislation.
So every sniper is a coward?
Your reply is like the news reports, designed for and coming from those with the intellect of five year olds.
That’s a very reasonable explanation, and probably correct.
The guy was not infantry. His main job was construction, and his training would not have included advanced techniques. He was nothing like a Marine sniper.
I still psychologically feel the pain in my thumb of an M1 stripper clip!!
Tactically it might have been a clever idea. Strategically it was a really bad idea. First, it puts a new class of weapons on the table. So far the violence related to perceived bias of police based on race has been pretty much limited to firearms and other mostly less dangerous weapons or tactics. But now using explosives in on the table.
As horrible as attacks based on firearms are, the last thing we need is for the police and people willing to act violently against them to be using explosives. We certainly don't want to end up like Syria, or Iraq, where a standard tactic on both sides of the fight is to detonate bombs.
It was a stunningly stupid decision to add explosives to the range of weapons being used.
Didn’t the Perp say he had planted bombs? How do you wait that out?
You people who think an AK 47 and SKS sound different must have dog hearing or something. I can’t say I have heard them fired back to back in the wild, but here is a video of kids shooting AKs and SKSs back to back and they sound identical to me.

Now, AR vs AK. Definitely.

I am guessing Perp intentionally chose 7.62x39 for its better penetration characteristics than the .223. Knowing cops wear body armor and would be hunkering behind car bodies, he would have wanted better penetration.
Good thing he wasn’t familiar with a rifle like the Garand. Shooting white cops with a .30-06 would have likely killed more of the surviving ones.
Yeah I know (construction and masonry) but still combat training in boot camp which is better than the average citizen gets.
Nothing cooler than a spam can. Bought a couple in the early 90’s, corrosive Yugo stuff, but like 50 bucks a pop.
Selling Russian non corrosive now for about $150.
I told my sister Thursday night when I heard the gunshots that it sounded like a SKS. Just that hammering bam bam bam sounded like a x39 and the SKS seems to hammer a bit slower than a semiauto AK. But it didn’t fit the common type of firearms that these terrorists use. I was shocked when I read that it was a SKS.
I have one of those magazines. I prefer the 10 round one
My SIL was Marine Infantry. He’d be scary if he was evil. My son was Army Guard, construction. He’s a good shot, but only because he likes to shoot and practices. I was USAF. I had a chance to get some extra training from the Army and took it, but I wouldn’t be scary at all. The Army training I took emphasized teamwork and included things like grenades.
The shooter wasn’t actually very effective, given a target-rich environment, night, surprise and good body armor.
I don’t care what the POS coward thought
Unless you are saying that police are at war with civilians your comment and question don’t apply
You’re right. I was using drone in a loose way but the definition of drone is an aircraft or ship. But in the big picture an automated device was used purposely to kill a suspect. Shakey ground and ripe for slippery slope.
Who cares? Do you think that a sniper requires removable mags?
