Interesting article showing the relationship between abstract mathematic equations and real world things that impact all of us.

I take issue with the article including the Black–Scholes financial derivatives model along with the others.

Hmmmmm.
E=mc^2
F=ma
E=1/2 mv^2
I could go on but I don’t want to show off. Maxwells equations ought to be in there somewhere. And some thermo stuff. And don’t forget Quantum Mechanics - lots of candidates there. Climate Change will not make the list.

(Plus, I don’t know how to push Greek and Latin characters into Freeperland from my iPad. And, as you can see, I can’t even do superscripts.)

So I leave it to others with more nimble fingers.

I didn’t do too bad....only the final three were ones I have never used.. Fourteen of the seventeen were part of my work...some at the margins , many on a daily basis

Pretty good article.

Amongst other things, I am a mathematician, cryptographer, and physicist.

While I get the math, still can’t really get my head around the Navier-Stokes equation.

I've had this for years, although it's a bit presumptuous in the face of Quantum Field Theory.

They missed one:

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + ... = -1/12

Supposedly this is a key to understanding String Theory

Also a key to understanding why everything is so totally messed up today ... even down to the math.

Hard to take a list seriously that doesn't include some version of

1) C = 2πr

2) a0 + a1x + a2x2+ ... + anxn = 0 has at least one complex root for every n > 0. [The Fundamental Theorem of Algebra]

3) f(x) = d/dx ∫ax f(t) dt [with suitable restrictions on f. The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.]

4)

The binomial Theorem.

5) Euler's formula: eiθ = cosθ + i sinθ

All of these are far more important than the Navier-Stokes equation, The Shannon Entropy Information Equation, May's Map, or The Black-Scholes Equation.

Excellent essay. Excellent comments. The fundamental mathematics of Rene Descartes (1596-1650) was used by the North American Aviation engineers in Downey, CA in the 1960’s to make the seventeen Apollo missions. Very impressive.

Pythagoras said, ‘If I have 300 loyal inferiors, then I can gain authority any country.’ Yup. A strong leader with a strong follower can influence a lot of people.

Interesting post.

I note that there were no muzzle formulas. I had thought they were credited with many math breakthroughs.

Here’s another key formula:

Global warming = BS in - BS out

I would add the "Ideal Gas Law",

PV=nRT

which is fundamental to thermodynamics

-- and "Ohm's Law,"

V=IR

which is fundamental to electronics.
