They may be man's best friend, but the question of where domestic dogs originated has long remained a mystery. Some argue that humans first domesticated wolves in Europe, while others claim this happened in Central Asia. Now, a new paper suggests that both these claims may be right, and that dogs were domesticated not once, but twice.

But in Europe, they didn’t domesticate them to be a food source.

Dogs were domesticated in many places around the world, and at different times. There is still some attempted domestication going on with foxes and wolves in scattered places around the world, and dogs are not of one source, either wolves or foxes, but in many instances of crossbreeding between several subspecies of both foxes and wolves.

And who says that Europeans never turned to dogs as a food source. Depends on how scarce protein sources are through supply channels. A LOT of dogs went feral.

Still do.

The Russians ran an experiment. They took wild wolves into captivity and only allowed the docile pups to breed. In like eight generations all the pups became friendly dogs.

Dogs are NOT descended from wolves.

Both come from a now extinct wolf-like canid that lived 40,000 years ago and is the ancestor of both species.

They’re more like sister clades.

No they did that with foxes.

Given enough time and selective breeding, tame foxes would happen.

The physical appearance also changed over that time. They began looking more juvenile. Basically domestication is a suspended development of adulthood. True for humans too.

Dogs are coservatives. Cats are cats, I have both. I love my dogs and they love me. My cats use me. My dogs would defend me to their death. My cats would eat my remaiders.

I do not understand why I like my cats.

"...domestication going on with foxes..."

The Russians have developed a tame, floppy-eared fox that that wants nothing more than to love and be loved by humans. They are adorable and I want one.

It is a fascinating story. It involved many generations of selective breeding.

I think it was just recently that the first non-European country (Japan) discovered a new element. (Or,isolated it, or what-ever it's called)
