The mother of the boy who fell into a gorilla enclosure has said that "accidents happen" on a Facebook post hitting out at critics.
The endangered animal was shot dead by zoo staff to protect the four-year-old after it began dragging him around.
Michelle Gregg has faced criticism for social media users and animal rights campaigners, who claim she should have been keeping a closer eye on her child.
Some animal lovers even suggested she should have been shot and killed instead of the gorilla Harambe.
Responding to the criticism on Facebook, she said: "I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers today. What started off as a wonderful day turned into a scary one.
"For those of you that have seen the news or been on social media that was my son that fell in the gorilla exhibit at the zoo. God protected my child until the authorities were able to get to him.

Heart wrenching, so many what-if’s. A beautiful animal destroyed.
Dontcha know they were supposed to Wait to see if the ape started to dismember the kid... wait for blood at least! Maybe the gorilla wanted to raise him as a son, a la.Tarzan! We have to assume WUV and attempt negotiation first of course! /sarc A child is worth more than a gorilla and anyone who thinks otherwise should be sterlized IMO.
Yes, kids falling into pools and lakes and drowning are also “accidents”.
Throughout history kids have paid with their lives for being unfortunate enough to have stupid and/or negligent parents.
I had not come across anything that described how the child fell into the gorilla pit, or film of the child’s fall if film existed.
How was it even possible?
As for the gorilla, there was no sign of protection of the child. The beast was suspicious and curious, not protective, and jerking the child under water to drag him several feet, TWICE, is one example of danger, not protection.
The gorilla could not figure out the clothes on the child, he was not “straightening” the damn things out for the boy, as I heard on TV coverage. Then off he drug the boy again, under water, and around the bend of the cliff.
You can not “wait and see” if the gorilla comes to like your child. Calling aggression “protection” is absurd.
The boy fell in the water, the gorilla saves the child from drowning, takes it to a safer area, and make sure its head is out of the water and tries to check it for injuries. For being a better parent that the humans, the gorilla was shot and killed.
How else can the kid learn to listen? Would you want his mum to be a helicopter mum?
At least they had a rifle handy. When the gorilla in Dallas escaped, they had to call the police.
F the gorilla. Humans are more important. Sorry neopagans.
Oh yeah, regardless of race. Man, she has her work cut out for her. I sure hope dad's there to help.
I agree the zoo had no choice, the could not take chances.
However, to me it looked like the gorilla was trying to protect the child. Perhaps it was dragging the child to a more secure location. We won’t ever know what it was thinking but there is a reasonable chance that it was not going to hurt the child. There was also a reasonable chance it would have hurt the child. So the zoo had to err on the side of caution.
The villians here are the parents.
“It’s because of you the Zoo can’t have nice gorillas.”
How about rambunctious? That is more accurate.
My wife used to have nightmares about our youngest daughter running into the street.
Even now, she is 23, and she sometimes shows no fear. We are amazed she made it this far with only a few broken bones.
You were there? If not STFU.
They could stuff the gorilla and put it back.
No, wait..., that's n8t right somehow...
Where’s the FATHER????
on a moving platform.
I thought the little boy was black, too. BLM vs. PETA?

But also there is such a thing as parents who are distracted by their other children. That is neither stupid or negligent,it is tragic.

Yes. And what if the kid had fallen into the alligator enclosure ... would have been eaten before they could shoot.
Either way, the parents are the ones responsible, not the animals, who are doing what animals are supposed to do.
