The killing of a gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo after a 4-year-old boy tumbled into the ape's enclosure triggered outrage and questions about safety, but zoo officials called the decision to use lethal force a tough but necessary choice.
More than 2,000 people signed a petition on Change.org that sharply criticized the Cincinnati Police Department and the zoo for putting down the animal and called for the child's parents to be "held accountable for their actions of not supervising their child."
Cincinnati police on Sunday said the parents had not been charged, but that charges could eventually be sought by the Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney. A spokeswoman for the prosecutor did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Then I understand why shooting was necessary. I know tranquilizers can actually cause a panic attack in an animal and can cause it to thrash around hard enough to actually tear muscle tissue apart. That kind of force would tear the boy in half, if it was holding him at the time it got shot.
“held accountable for their actions of not supervising their child.”
Maybe that would be a good rule to follow for “urban youth” rioting and causing trouble at the drop of a hat.
Some are merely mediocre.
Even if he wasn't you can't take a chance regarding what could still happen. The zoo did the right thing.
The name of Jesus is not a mere exclamation.
So is safe zoo design, apparently.
It would also be right for the zoo to make sure the family pays dearly for it.
I don’t disagree. I didn’t have enough context to know if this death could have been avoided. I trust the zoo did what it could to avoid it and only acted when it did not believe there were other options.
Obummers fault. He made Xanax and Valium nearly impossible to Score, even for Zoosters.
Perhaps it would be right for the *zoo* to be made to pay for poor design and/or supervision of that particular area.
Thousands of families go to the zoo without this happening.
I’m thinking those parents owe that zoo a monkey.
From what my wife said, apparently the kid crawled under a rail fence and then easily gained access. I think the only thing the parents are guilty of is taking eyes off the kid for a few seconds. The zoo should make sure these are kid proof.

Thousands and thousands of people never had their Ford Pinto blow up either.
All it takes is a second of distract for a child of that age to do something like this. Also he must be a white child, otherwise, they are racists.
I have Christian friends who use it freely. It doesn’t sit well with me. But, I am guilty of of using “God” where I shouldn’t, though I’m trying to not do it.
The Brits - those insane animal-lovers, are in meltdown over this. Some sick folks over there.
Mom was probably too busy updating her facebook page. I hope she’s charged with everything they can think of, including the value of the gorilla. It’s a darn shame they were forced to kill him.
btw - the boy has been released from the hospital.
It’s a zoo.
Surely they had a tranquilizer gun.
I don’t think lethal force was required.
The parents are the ones who should have been shot.
