Don’t these young people understand that business of all kind must be buried in regulations by liberals. Regulation writing bureaucrats must have jobs too.

Here we go again: Fawning about Uber et al.

Absent the spin, Uber drivers are treated like crap, work longer hours and make less $$.

Yeah, that’ll drive ‘em to the right. Sure. /s

At least a better alternate to those sometimes rude taxi drivers.

Recently rode with a 72 yo driver in a 2014 Toyota Highlander. Nice clean car, good driver and had a pleasant conversation.

In Sarasota, many Uber drivers are retirees. The last Uber drive I had was in a Lexus.

If the fact that they need Uber because they don’t have a job and can’t afford a car of their own like every other generation for the past 60 years doesn’t drive them to pro-capitalist politics, then it is unlikely that this will.

AirBNB is awesome. We’re traveling in Japan this summer for a month and literally spent $1,250 for one month of prime staying places - we’re talking 2 homes with 2-3 bedrooms and a full kitchen and bathrooms. It’s really a great alternative to hotels.

The strip club ad is a nice atmospheric touch.

I don’t think that is necessarily a good comparison. In NYC, an Uber ride typically costs MORE than a taxi ride — because it’s one of the few places where you can stand on a street corner for 30 seconds and hail a cab ride at almost any time. Uber can’t compete with that kind of convenience, so they generally serve more of a higher-end livery service market.

I could use the same language about the “sometimes violent”, background-checked uber drivers.../s

I think the insurance industry is going to eventually shut down business models like Uber and Airbnb -- simply by holding their policy holders to the same standards that they would apply to a commercial limousine service or hotel.

I'm all for limited regulations, but I also don't see how a business model that is built on operating in gray areas around the margins of the law can last very long.

As soon as a private Uber driver refuses to drive for a gay “wedding”’or for a profiled Mohammedan terror suspect, millenials will again favor all regulations on “web-based” contracting companies.

If that's the case, why did the price of a medallion go from $1 mil to $500,000 in the span of three years?

I was referring to burial by an avalanche of regulations.
You are right about the insurance companies. They require notification of business use of vehicles. Taxis are a whole different class. Very high rates.

The problem is, young people have no problem being absolute hypocrites. They want less regulation when it benefits them, but they also want more regulation, taxes, socialism, when they think that will benefit them. Plus, no matter what they think about that stuff, it’s not going to affect their views on moral issues.

At best the libertarians might capitalize on this phenomenon, if they weren’t seen as a joke party, but they are, so I doubt that will happen.

The City of New York had been studying options for expanding the medallion pool for several years. Since 2013 they have added several thousand “green cab” medallions for special cabs that can pick up passengers on city streets in the outer boroughs and northern Manhattan. I believe the goal was to add 18,000 new medallions as part of that initiative.
