According to reports, the friend received texts messages from the woman, who said she was having some sort of emergency, according to the Citizen-Times.
After about an hour, the woman was reportedly found tied to a tree near a trail, according to a fire department dispatch radio recording obtained by WLOS.

I’m 61 and I love to be alone. I’d do it ... sometimes.
Agreed. Those who have experience in the outdoors know that even a simple wrong step and a fall can potentially be deadly. At this time of year, temperatures at night can still be a challenge for someone who has no way of keeping warm. Always go with a buddy, imho.
I miss the old days when i could just assume that the perp was just some crazy white inbred...
Be careful.
I guess so. :)
I have a friend (woman) who has done the whole AT twice, solo, at 68 and 70 years old.
To each their own.
First thing that came into my mind.
After a week of camping i usually have mushrooms growing in my butt crack.
sorry ladies..
God bless her.
this sounds like a kinky story gone wrong
This story reminds me of a lady, the age decsiption fits, who got ‘lost’ in the wilderness near me, here in New Mexico. The lady was from South Carolina, and not quite right in the head. If the name of the lady ‘tied to the tree’ is Caroly Dorn, it’s the same woman. During her period of being ‘lost’ here, she had repeatedly hidden from her rescuers, until she became miserable enough to approach them when she finally decided to be ‘rescued’. How do I know she kept hiding from those who were out looking for her? Because I know some of the guys who were looking for her. I’d seen her car parked where she set off from, and then saw it towed.

If the guy is living wild, it has been pretty rainy and clothes not drying, therefore smell musty. Did you note the [...] in the story, what was left out? Perhaps a description of her having been raped, and whoever called it in was being discrete.
Interesting.
You know, the more I read it for details the more I think you may be right.
Perhaps it is a Fantasy being acted out. Time will tell. :)
I tend to forget about wet forests living here in CA where it’s bone dry May to Oct.
This was caused by either Global Warming or Racism.
The missing bit:
The woman’s condition was not released, however a firefighter asked dispatchers to send a park ranger ASAP.
By Friday, the incident was being investigated as a possible assault and National Park Service Rangers had released a description of a possible suspect.
