PORSCHE REVEALS NEW V-8 ENGINE AT 37TH VIENNA MOTOR SYMPOSIUM

Porsche unveiled a new V-8 engine at the 37th Vienna Motor Symposium that will eventually power the range-topping variants of the upcoming second-generation Panamera and the next Cayenne SUV. In addition to powering the larger vehicles in Porsche’s lineup, the new V-8 will also be used by other Volkswagen Group brands including Audi and Bentley.

Featuring two twin-scroll turbochargers, the new 4.0-liter V-8 is rated at 550 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque (up from 520 hp and 516 lb-ft), which puts it just shy of the current 4.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 utilized in the 570-hp Porsche Panamera Turbo S. Despite its power, the new engine will also have lower CO2 emissions and improved fuel economy thanks to a cylinder deactivation feature that will cut consumption by 30 percent, according to Ward’s Auto.

The body in that pic is bland and plain. Hope they do something (other than the engine) to differentiate it.

A few years ago I had a bad hesitation problem with a car. I told the mechanic it felt like when you used to have a bad accelerator pump. He had no idea what I was talking about.

Ditto. I’ve had 3 Toyo pickups and 2 4-Runners. Kinda like the new Tacoma’s body style over the last model. My last was a 2004.

Yes, VW Group owns them as well as Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti and several models only sold in Europe.

My 4Runner is a 1997 and has 230K miles on it. I have had to put in 2 starters and 3 batteries. I think the starter is too close to the exhaust.

It was really interesting learning the feel of “lift throttle oversteer”

The WRX (early ones at least) had that in spades. I was ready for it, and scared the shit out of the salesman demonstrating it after he swore the car did not do that.

Always loved Porsches. I dont know a model I dont like. Always wanted one. Been looking at some Boxsters recently. They can be had relatively cheap. I know the motor can detonate without warning, but I think I’m about to take the risk.

I also Love Toyotas. Have owned a Corolla, Subaru Outback( affiliate company) a Camry and now own a Highlander.

Featuring two twin-scroll turbochargers,

Scroll Turbochargers. Is that common?
Scroll AC compressors are used almost exclusively now. Never heard or thought of the technology being used for supercharging.

They had a Ford sponsored test drive event at our church last week. I think the church got 20 bucks for each person that showed up, gave their address and email info, filled out a sort questionaire, etc.

Suprisingly they let me out in a V8 Mustang GT. The guy riding along didn’t flinch when I floored it and ran up to 100 or so (country road) but he nearly puked when I jammed the brakes full on right afterwards. Solid brakes on that baby.

My current vehicles are a 1997 Toyota 4Runner, 2013 Mercedes C300 4-Matic and 2013 Audi S6. Currently I am looking at the various versions of the McLaren 570 and others like Porsche 911 Turbo S, Audi R8, Mercedes AMG GTS and perhaps on the upper end Lamborghini Huracan, Ferrari 488 GTB and McLaren 650S. These would only be occasional weekend drivers.

I have two extra used edelbrocks that I bought to rotate with my 67 Camaro and 57 Bel Air as backups. One was so corroded up by ethanol that it may not be salvageable. Carbs are at the same time simple and finicky devices.

Yeah, I feel like the last of a breed.

From Wikipedia"

"Twin-scroll or divided turbochargers have two exhaust gas inlets and two nozzles, a smaller sharper angled one for quick response and a larger less angled one for peak performance. With high-performance camshaft timing, exhaust valves in different cylinders can be open at the same time, overlapping at the end of the power stroke in one cylinder and the end of exhaust stroke in another. In twin-scroll designs, the exhaust manifold physically separates the channels for cylinders that can interfere with each other, so that the pulsating exhaust gasses flow through separate spirals (scrolls). With common firing order 1-3-4-2, two scrolls of unequal length pair cylinders 1-4 and 3-2. This lets the engine efficiently use exhaust scavenging techniques, which decreases exhaust gas temperatures and NOx emissions, improves turbine efficiency, and reduces turbo lag evident at low engine speeds."
