Most parents want to do right by their kids, and one way they can do that is to try to live somewhere with better school options, says Ann Owens, the studys author and an associate professor at USCs sociology department. But as income inequality has increased, higher-income parents have more resources to live where they want to live, while those with lower incomes have less.
While less pernicious than the racism that led to segregated schools and the white flight of the 1970s, the findings lead to a troubling conclusion: that children face greater and growing stratification in neighborhood settings than the whole population of residents. The trend, writes Professor Owens, has implications for growing inequalities in their future

Get married before having kids, stay married after having kids - and you and flee crime areas too.
Think fun, enjoy the gun.
I have seen the “actin’ white” accusation in action. It came from the so called teachers and administrators at an inner city high school
1) The Elites want their kids to have an advantage in life.
2) Not all Elite kids have superior IQ, and so there is a limit to how much of an advantage better education will give them.
3) The middle class also produces smart kids, many with IQs higher than the average Elite kid.
4) The way to ensure the Elite kids maintain a superior position, is to cripple the educations of the regular middle and working classes.
Just another false narrative developed by losers to advance statism/socialism. Of course you have income inequality. The labor market rewards higher skills/rarer abilities with more money. How many people can hit a major league pitch .33 of the time and knock it to the outfield? Not all that many. Should they get the same pay as someone who works at burger king and whose talent is limited to the ability to produce 10 second belches?
The ignorant jackass, Jessica Mendoza, who wrote this acts as though "income inequality" is a bad thing. Income inequality is a wonderful thing. It's what fuels capitalism - the best economic system ever to be developed.
Yep, what you said. Its sad our taxes are paying for this “research”.
We see it in the persistance of language despite everything else. In Brazil, Portuguese remained long after the Pope divided the world between Spain and Portugal.
More than 1,500 years after the Fall of Rome, Europe is still culturally divided between the Germans and the Romans--basically in the way people think and perceive life and the world. This was a shocking revelation to me when I first lived in Europe.
Such cultural conditioning can be difficult--even impossible--to alter.
Obama has all that covered.
Very true.
want better schools
charter schools
in NY the UNIONS have ruined education
I assume that the author is a racist, she sees all of this through the lens of race. Sadly, as racist as many of the posters here on FR.
I live in an Ozarks county that is over 95% white. All of the problems she listed and claimed results in less diversity are problems I see with the poor whites here. Drug use, no fathers in the home, criminality is culturally accepted, high drop out rates, teen pregnancy, lots of kids in foster care, and dependence on government handouts. The culture of generational poverty isn’t based on race.
poor White people are like Ferrari’s with 600 pounds of cement bags in the trunk. You can remove the burdens easily enough
What’s pernicious about living where you want and where will be best for your kids?
everyone knows what a good school is. Everyone knows what a good neighborhood is. You just can’t speak it
Translation: The government should decide where you live.
Whites in the Ozarks that live in generational poverty have the same cultural issues to overcome as urban kids; starting with the breakdown of the family, government dependence, and a rejection on cultural norms like work, self-reliance, and education.
Sad that today’s role models are people like thug football players and Bruce Jenner instead of real heroes. Armstrong’s book was excellent by the way.
Better yet, cordially invite her to move into a crime-infested, inner-city neighborhood. I would all these liberals who bemoan "white racism" live in places where they don't encounter violent, black criminals. Make them put their money where their mouths are.
It looks like many libs still believe in the blank slate i.e. tabula rasa theory. In other words, people/children are only what society puts into them. Genes account for nothing.
The reality is in America genes determine 80-90% how a person will do in life. Sorry, but it's hardwired. Libs have been doing the "diversity is great" scam for many decades now.
Tell that to the white teacher on Long Island who was recently choked and knocked out by a black mother whose child had been mildly disciplined by the teacher. After getting a call from her unruly brat, the black mother went to the school, charged past security, and attacked the teacher. While the teacher was down on the hallway floor unconscious, other black students surrounded her and kicked her in the head.
Many more instances like that occur in our nation's "diverse" schools. So how's that diversity working out lib teachers?
A great deal of the cause of “resegregation” is the dumbing down of public schools. Instead of grouping low achievers together and giving them special help, while higher achievers can learn at their own speed, public schools have held everyone to the level of the slowest.
It’s not just white people who put their kids in private schools. Black professionals, lawyers, doctors, etc, move into their own neighborhoods and send their kids to better schools, too.
This writer is just another liberal trying to start a race war.
No matter how you slice it, if you are white, you are perpetuating racism.
