A 22-year-old man tried to commit suicide by slitting his throat at a temple in northwest Delhi's Bharat Nagar on Saturday morning.
Police said the man, Shankar Chaudhary, claimed to have been directed by Goddess Kali to make the "sacrifice".
Chaudhary, who belongs to Bihar's Gaya district, is a labourer. According to the police, the incident took place around 9.30am, when the temple was packed. The man was immediately taken to a hospital and was said to be out of danger by late evening.
"Eyewitnesses said Chaudhary had a coconut in one hand and a knife in the other. He slit his throat in front of everyone and collapsed due to excessive bleeding. No suicide note was found with him," said Vijay Singh, DCP northwest.
However, police found a diary from Chaudhary's house in which he had written that he often saw Shiva in his dreams, directing him to sacrifice himself in front of Goddess Kali. He had also mentioned that this step would help his family overcome their financial crisis.
"Chaudhary's wife told us that he had been disturbed over his their financial condition and had turned to spirituality. His family members said that he spent hours praying and performing religious rituals. He had even stopped going to work," said a senior police officer.
Police have registered an FIR for attempt to suicide against Chaudhary.
What a cut up!
didn’t that guy in one of the Indiana jones movies chant “kali (something or other)?
This will give the Cruz campaign ideas. Soon interns and campaign volunteers will be sacrificing themselves to Khali so he can win the nomination. Teddy might even try the pulling of the still beating heart trick from Temple of Doom.
Yes, Khali was the god the cult worshiped in Temple of Doom.
This poor soul.
Yes.
Did this happen at the Maine Delegate Convention?
thanks :) thought so.
Far more practical than afterlife virgins.
So disturbed over their financial condition that he stopped going to work?
Hmmm. Worry about money so much that you stop going into work. How is that supposed to solve the problem?
What happened to the coconut?
Just when I thought I couldn’t see a trumpett posting anything more asinine, you once again prove me wrong. Congratulations you win the Ass of the Week Award!

It is a security, distro to die for but that’s going a little far...
“Chaudhary had a coconut in one hand and a knife in the other.”
I can’t count the number of times I’ve been in that same situation.
