With nearly half a million registered members, the American Independent Party is bigger than all of California's other minor parties combined. The ultraconservative party's platform opposes abortion rights and same sex marriage, and calls for building a fence along the entire United States border.

But a Times investigation has found that a majority of its members have registered with the party in error. Nearly three in four people did not realize they had joined the party, a survey of registered AIP voters conducted for The Times found.

The Rent Is Too Damn High
You can check online what party you are registered with. I did it with my mother who switched to Independent status. She is now registered as an Independent. Was with the Democrat party prior to switching.
Back when I got pissed off at the GOP and changed my voter registration, I initially went with the Surfer’s Party of America.

Not surprisingly (for surfers), no one did the necessary paperwork and the party got delisted. So now it’s N.P.A. - No Party Affiliation. Can’t vote in the primaries, but haven’t seen anyone since Reagan that I’d want to vote for in a primary. Hold my nose and pull the lever.
I was always designated, in Maryland, as an ‘Independent’ voter. Several years ago they changed the designation of people who wanted to belong to no political party, to something like ‘unaffiliated’. Perhaps it was because of this confusion with the Independent Party.
