KNOXVILLE (WATE) Just hours after attending celebrity basketball game in Zaevion Dobsons honor, family says Dobsons cousin was shot.
Knoxville Police Department said the shooting happened at around 9:46 p.m. at Danny Mayfield Park, located at 700 College Street. They said Jajuan Latham, 12, died after he was shot in the head.
A gathering of a large number of people was being held in the park when shooting erupted between the party attenders and occupants of two vehicles that were driving by the park, according to Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch. He said Jajuan Latham was shot while sitting in the back seat of his fathers parked vehicle. They are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call Knoxville Police Departments crime information line at (865) 215-7212.
We were at the celebrity basketball game and he had a good time and he was just more exciting to Bobby Maze than I was, said Hubert Latham, Jajuan Lathams father. We went and had a good time and he was a good kid and they took my sons life.
Hubert Latham said they had pulled up to a park to pick up his sons friends when he heard gunshots.
The first thing I do is reach my son and I just realize hes not moving, so Im like, Whats going on, is he asleep?,' said Hubert Latham. When I picked him up, thats when I realized, what I seen, blood.

The father says he held his sons stomach, rushing him to University of Tennessee Medical Center. Police said the 12-year-old died just after 11:00 p.m. from his injuries.
I knew he was going to pull through. It broke my heart 30 minutes later when they came out and told me my son was dead. The only thing that came to my mind was, who did this?, said Hubert Latham.
Saturdays Bobby Maze Celebrity Basketball Game was Saturday night to encourage Knoxville youth to stop the violence. Four years ago he lost one of his close cousins to gun violence. After hearing of Zaevions story, he knew he had to help out. Jajuan Latham and Zaevion Dobsons mother, Zenobia, were in attendance.
I was devasted, said former University of Tennessee basketball player Bobby Maze. Just knowing that Jajuan was one of the first kids at the gym to come in to see this celebrity game and he was excited about this event and to hear about hours later or after the game he was killed, it really hurt me. The whole purpose of doing this event was to shed some light on some of the things that has been happening in this community Zaevion and its just been a lot of gun violence . so I wanted to bring something positive to this area and to find out a kid that participated and came out to support this event was killed after and 12-years-old. You know, its just sad.

Zaevion Dobson, a Fulton High School football player, died shielding three girls from bullets. Knoxville police believe the chain of events started on December 17 when Brandon Perry was involved in a shooting that served as a catalyst for three other shootings.
Police believe the incident prompted a shooting at Brandon Perrys home where his mother was shot. After learning his mother was shot, investigators said Brandon and several additional suspects drove to Badgett Drive where they shot into a crowd. Perry was later shot and killed.
A minority of Americans make the entire nation look bad. Many of us will never be disarmed because some parents refuse to raise their children properly and keep them out of gangs.
(The names these parents tack onto their children are just ridiculous!)
I hate to sound crass, but somebody that stupid should not be having children.
Who indeed.
Good luck with all that.
good lord, JUST STOP. JEEEEEESSSS.
It's a fight or flight panicked confusion thing, I'm sure. The information didn't register for the parent of the dead child immediately. I'd not dwell on the immediate reaction to a parent finding their child shot in the head.
Yeah, it was crass and a little insensitive.
Keep little kids home when it is near 10:00 pm and gangs are out running wild in the area.
I see Tennessee has renegade Mennonites too...
Seems a decent family living in “the hood”. Heartbreaking photo. If any of the kids try and get out, it seems they are targeted by the thugs. You can hear from the old movies, “You ain’t getting out of here.”
I have an acquaintance who is a trauma doc at the local downtown hospital. He says the first words out of a (conscious) person who’s been shot are “I got no idea who did this”
Horrible! When does it stop?
Do these black lives matter?
Obama will put a stop to it.
He’s been busy for the past seven plus years fighting for the American people and those of the world by coming out against warming the globe.
He’s also been very busy keeping his promise to put the coal companies out of business. And, it’s working. Just last week Peabody Coal filed for bankruptcy and 46,000 more Americans are filing for unemployment.
Right now he’s busy making certain the cable companies don’t rip off consumers. The bulk of his constituency don’t pay their cable bills anyway....we do.
Further, he’s making sure that America’s permanent underclass is dramatically increased by millions of illegals and thousands of Muslims. That way the negroes will feel more comfortable knowing they’re not the only ones that will participate in urban riots.
Not really. Their deaths can't be used to attack the Evil Whitey.
What the hell is a Zaevion? Is it some kind of subatomic particle? An experimental aircraft? An allergy medication? Who would name their child something that pretentious and stupid?
Unfortunately, it will only worsen.
Great strides backwards have been made in respect to racial harmony, thanks to the phony presidency of the worst leader since Caligula.
You are so right.
Focusing on the wrong end of the equation.
Picture wasn’t really necessary.
“ Zaevion “ “ Jajuan “ “ Zenobia “
If his mama saw a moving van right before delivery of Zaevlion, his name might have been Mayflower.
