One of the victims, identified in court documents as "Individual D," told prosecutors that Hastert "put a 'Lazyboy'-type chair in direct view of the shower stalls in the locker room where he sat while the boys showered."
Only in America can one rise from a child molester to Speaker of the House.
And of course a guy with this background ends up as the Speaker of the House. You’d almost think that this was intentional, the way that it all happens....
If it was as obvious as that, how'd the guy ever get elected?
I keep picturing George Costanza in that massage chair.
It wasn’t obvious to him, or anyone else apparently. Just covered up in keeping with the secrecy and social stigma of sex abuse at the time. Whether scoutmaster or coach or whatever doesn’t mean the same scenario would unfold today.
Richter also claimed he doesn’t recall anyone questioning Hastert’s behavior. Julie Kliegman
@chrislhayes @mattyglesias tbh, I don’t find it’s upsetting me now. I’m just so struck by how easy it was to do that. Nobody questioned it.

I think old Denny felt “something move” like George did with the masseuse.
and just think...if the fedgov hadn’t stuck its’ nose where it shouldn’t belong, none of this would have been uncovered.
One would think that the Republican Party would vet the man they elect to be Speaker of the House and third in line for the presidency.
Pederasty had been accepted cultural practice during ancient Greeks, whom undoubtedly laid the foundation for the Western Civilization. The ancient world was infested with pederasty and pedophilia.
Pederasty was suppressed by the Judaic/Biblical influence, but it has remained at the core of the gubmint for thousands of years.
Since Hastert was sexually attracted to young men as a High School coach isn’t it logical that he was attracted to them as a congressman? If Hastert was that way with young men as a congressman wouldn’t he have had just as much opportunity to engage in perverted behavior? Also, wouldn’t Hastert have had help engaging young men in Washington DC?
Hastert had a logical explanation for the chair. He said it was so he could see if the kids were fighting. He wanted to protect the boys by watching them closely. Very closely.
I think it moved.
What’s he doin’ with a la-z-boy in the locker room/office anyway? Who does that?
I remember the late journalist Bob Novak (one of my favorites) predicting correctly that Hastert would be Gingrich’s successor when others were not sure who Hastert was. Bob talked about how everybody in the House liked Hastert. Obviously, Mr. Novak was fooled too, and he was supposedly one who could find where the bodies are buried.
Federal employees.
Dennis Hastert should commit suicide.
“Hastert had a logical explanation for the chair. He said it was so he could see if the kids were fighting.”
Well, how about giving the guy the benefit of the doubt.
I don’t think the chair placement itself proves anything.
Normally he probably would have been but with events at the time moving so quickly and with the need for a leader perceived as squeaky clean they may not have felt there was time for internal vetting. The rumors had certainly been circulating for a while even with no direct evidence. If nothing else, is a sad and instructive blowback to an era before domestic violence and rape laws that are so easy to idealize by current standards.
I'm pretty sure that no one is allowed to rise to the top UNLESS they have bodies buried. Everyone must be vulnerable. Everyone needs to be bought and sold. Hastert was perfect -- of course he could be Speaker! -- they could destroy him any time they wanted. But as long as he "played ball" they'd leave him alone.
I think part of the problem with Trump is that although he has minor flaws, he is not vulnerable in the typical ways. He is his own man, not theirs.
Cruz, on the other hand, is a stooge for the Establishment, and they have things over him. No, I don't "have proof". But it's pretty obvious.
