One of my favorite instumentals. Always thought it had a beautiful, haunting quality.
Hope you enjoy.

Oh, yes, I remember it well. This is an absolutely wonderful rendition of a beautiful melody. I'm bookmarking it to listen to its soothing strains after I hear the nuttiness of network nattering nabobs like Kelly, Krauthamper, Wan Williams, George Swill, Cuomo and Matthews.
Gracias for posting, Simpson.

When music was great...and actually *was* music (see: “rap”).

This song was a big hit in 1941.

I always thought it was a tribute to Buddy Holly's widow. If it was a big hit in 1941, that wasn't the case. Can't remember what made me think that.

I think she was named after the song.

Mexican composer and film actor Lorenzo Barceleta’s “most famous song is ‘María Elena,’ which was originally written for the First Lady of Mexico, the wife of president Emilio Portes Gil.” It was composed in 1932.

To: simpson96
It should be played as a waltz. The best version I’ve ever heard was by 101 Strings, and Austrian muzak ensemble.

I’m partial to Ry Cooder’s version from his album Boomer’s Story.

The song was written in 1932 and was dedicated to the wife of Mexican president Emilio Portes Gil.

Lovely tune I heard a vocal of it once, and retained the first line in memory:
Maria Elena you’re the answer to my prayer...

Me too. Buddy’s widow’s name IS Marie Elena.
You can google her.
