As the father of three daughters, I reserved the right to interview their dates. . . For the next few hours, she would be affected by his ability to drive a car, avoid the bad crowds and stay sober. I wanted to know if he could do it. I wanted to know if he was decent.
This was my word: decent. Would he treat my daughter with kindness and respect? Could he be trusted to bring her home on time? In his language, actions and decisions, would he be a decent guy?
Decency mattered to me as a dad, and decency matters to Americans. We take note of the person who pays their debts. . . When the husband honors his wedding vows, when the teacher makes time for the struggling student, when the employee refuses to gossip about her co-worker, when the losing team congratulates the winning team, we can characterize their behavior as decent.
We appreciate decency. We applaud decency. We teach decency. We seek to develop decency.
So why isnt decency doing better in the presidential race?
The leading Republican candidate to be the next leader of the free world would not pass my decency interview.
I dont know Mr. Trump. But Ive been chagrined at his antics. He ridiculed a war hero. He made a mockery of a reporters menstrual cycle. He made fun of a disabled reporter. . . He routinely calls people stupid and dummy.
Such insensitivities wouldnt be acceptable even for a middle school student body election. But for the Oval Office? And to do so while brandishing a Bible and boasting of his Christian faith?

SHe’s married to Chris Kinnan and this is his sister.
“No war hero in my book. Doubt it? See what he has done, or more rightly, failed to do, for the POW/MIA’s. McCain has been on the wrong side of EVERY issue for the past eight years”
As one vet to another, I agree.
I wonder what Max Lucado would think if Ted Cruz was making his “Sapiosexual” moves on his daughter ?
The bullies cannot suffer such truths. I hope you do not get zotted over this.
with all the crap printed about Cruz are you kidding me? You guys are an insult to the board
LOL. You might note that Ted Cruz is not mentioned in the article. Why do you feel the only way you can defend your choice is to attack others? Also, I am curious. What does it say about someone that they have dozens of links to their vanity posts on their home page? A little full of ourselves, are we?
Being an elder in a pretty conservative evangelical church, I am reluctant to criticize pastors. However, a few things bear mentioning: 1) Max made this announcement just prior to Super Tuesday - Maximizing media attention to Max (I assure you that his book and other sales spiked shortly thereafter). 2) By comparison to other ministers of the Gospel, Max is quite wealthy - the Gospel has been profitable for him. To be sure some are wealthier, but Max is definitely part of the .1%. 3) Max is quite willing to make voting for a political candidate he dislikes a litmus test for genuine Christian faith - he had no such objections to Bill Clinton, Obama, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders who are vigorously anti-Christian.
Pardon me if I ignore Max or anyone who wants to use his opinion to lend authority to their own candidate preferences.
I’m drinking the Kool-Aid too. It’s called being normal. Trump is a disgrace with the things he says
Well, huh.
THAT response isn’t decent.
Since Lucado is right, you must be...
Don’t like Christians huh?
you’ve got to be kidding me with the whoremaster you’re voting for
...still more evidence.
I wonder what Max might have said about Andrew Jackson? I think Trump is a lot like him (but with a far different set of great accomplishments).
Max Lucado doesn’t pass the “sound doctine” test, which is a much bigger deal.
Everyone, just ignore little Timmy. With the Freeper name, TIMMY, he’s either a child, a troll or both.
Just point, laugh & go on.
LOL!
You mean “El Cinco”?
There is a really strange movement around Cruz - Barton, Beck, now Lucado, and others in religious circles. I question their judgement.
Or his handle could come from Timmy on South Park, in which case his name should be pronounced “TIMM-eh.”
