A fierce debate has broken out among Donald Trumps family, friends and campaign advisers over how to respond to the Republican establishments last-ditch effort to deny him the presidential nomination.
Trumps confidants are split over how to handle the sudden onslaught, with some saying he should become more presidential.
But according to a high-ranking member of Trumps inner circle, Trump is ignoring this advice and listening to his own inner Donald.
The debate broke out after Mitt Romney viciously attacked Trump as a phony and fraud during a speech Romney delivered at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City earlier this month.
Heated disagreement inside the campaign intensified when the race began to tighten and a group of mega-rich donors started pouring millions of dollars into anti-Trump TV commercials in Florida, which holds a do-or-die primary on March 15.
Members of this establishmenta good old boy network of donors, elected officials, local and state party officials, pollsters, advisers, and conservative pooh-bahsare desperate to prevent Trump from winning the 1,237 delegates needed to claim the GOP nomination.
They want to throw the nomination onto the floor of a contested convention in July, where they can pick a candidate more acceptable to them.
Some of Trumps advisers have urged him to stop acting like an Alpha dog, drop the narcissistic me-me-me, and start talking about substance and policy.
Others are urging him to reach into his pockets and invest millions of his own money in TV commercials to answer the establishments negative ads.
Donald Trump makes a point.
But according to the source, Trump thinks he knows better.
He intends to continue with the strategy that has worked for him up to now, says the source. Hes going to rely on Twitter, Facebook and large campaign rallies, and he has no intention of pouring many millions into TV commercials.
As for becoming more presidential, this source continued, let me quote Donald and youll get the gist. He says, and I quote, I dont want to be a jerk. I have to do what I have to do. If people attack me, Im going to attack them even harder and theyll live to regret it.
“He is who he is. Shouldnt be a phony just to please others.”
Absolutely. I cringe every time I hear those phonies go on about “My friends across the aisle...”
I laughed out loud at his last press conference, when he referred to the reporters there as dishonest people, just before they started asking questions. Put them on the defensive before they even started!
I am afraid Trump is not going to spend money he really should have spent. He would have been better to just ask all the supporters to send small donation to his website which we would all have been happy to do. Fl is a big effing deal.
I’m not a Trump-ette but I hate the disingenuous lying media.
It’s his fault he’s an outsider and not a politician I agree on that
I’m leaning toward Cruz because he’ll be more predictable, but I sure like the way Trump has taken a wrecking ball to the loathsome media and PC.
My issue with Trump is that I really don’t know what he will and will not do. It’s a little hard taking a lot of what he says seriously since he has changed significantly from the past, so who knows if he’s going to change again.
My best take on him is that he sees every situation as a deal to be worked on. So all these positions he’s taking on issues are simply his “opening bids” on the deal. How the deal will eventually be consummated is anybody’s guess.
On the positive side is that on most issues he’s on our side. Also his opening bid is quite high (some would call it ridiculous, even insulting, such as Mexico paying for the wall), but in doing so he has already made the idea of a wall palatable, thus has already moved the negotiation a substantial way in his favor, even BEFORE the negotiation start! That’s quite an achievement.
He’s done the same with muslim refugees, waterboading, trade, etc.
I would have no trouble supporting him, even though his promises may get significantly watered down. You have to expect that from him or you’ll be greatly disappointed.
But then again, how many politicians keep their word?
A Trump/Cruz ticket would be great.
The inner GOPe is showing through FR. Folks not quite as 'anti' as one would think. Trump is the "Give me liberty or give me death" type candidate. Over the top but patriotic.
Jefferson thought Patrick Henry was over the top, but never questioned his patriotism. Today, too many folks really don't want an 'America first' candidate that would take a swing at King 'globalist' George.
Well it will be interesting to see whether or not Trump is “the guy” and who he’d pick for his running mate. I’m just thinking of all the nastiness hurled back and forth and now after all is said and done they’re going to be best bud’s??
Gosh, President Bush was so “nice” — he never fought back when people dumped on him. Very presidential! Of course, the islamists attacked us and the Mexican government facilitated an invasion, but he maintained his presidential demeanor, which after all is the most important consideration!
Same with Carter — he’s always nice; in fact, he’s the archbishop of the entire Church of Nice! Funny, the Afghanis set up their training camps and the Ayatollah walked all over him, mocked him and took hostages, but he was presidential! Humble! Always smiling and most of all, a really great Christian!
“A fierce debate has broken out among Donald Trumps family, friends and campaign advisers over how to respond to the Republican establishments last-ditch effort to deny him the presidential nomination.”
First, I don’t believe this. Second, campaign advisers are nits and should be squashed like bugs. Anyone remember that woman who advised Gore to dress like an alpha male? That didn’t work well. Oh, yeah. How about Jeb’s! campaign advisers. Oops! Well, at least they were able to rob Jeb! of a couple of million.
“Trouble is, voters expect their presidents to act presidential.”
Au contraire, skeeter. Acting “presidential” is more propaganda from the MSM to entice The Donald to stop his very effective attacks. In this election, voters want to see the GOPe and rat party squashed like the cockroaches that they are. We’re in the middle of a voters’ revolution. Catch up, or at least get your phone out and record it.
Yeah, I hear you. It’s been rather nasty, but who knows, politics makes strange bedfellows. But I agree, the odds are low.
The family was sitting around talking this very thing and Reagan/Bush was brought up and how Bush ridiculed Reagan about his ideas on the economy and wound up as his VP.
Trouble is Trump handles everyone this way and he's alienated alot of voters in the process.
If Trump wants a larger share of the vote - and certainly a large enough share to win in the general, he HAS to expand his appeal. That means knocking off the schoolyard crap. Trouble is he doesn't do 'presidential' very well.
“Trouble is Trump handles everyone this way and he’s alienated alot of voters in the process.”
Okay, skeeter, but I’m calling your hand and you’re gonna have to prove your assertion.
Of course I can’t prove it, other than to point to Trumps negatives and recent polls showing Rubio beats, and Cruz beats badly, Trump one on one.
I do strongly believe that Donald Trump needs to have ads out there which respond to the GOPe attacks.
Donald Trump needs to understand that no man is an island, and he needs to heed the good advice he's getting. It can't hurt...
“Of course I cant prove it, other than to point to Trumps negatives and recent polls showing Rubio beats, and Cruz beats badly, Trump one on one.”
Admitting you can’t prove it is a good thing. That means everything you said afterwards is probably crap. All you gotta do is accept it, move on and everything will be okay. Right?
So, you gonna vote for Trump in the CA primary?
Are you with the People's Druzhina or Komsomol?
My wife signed up with a wine club. Does that count?
If you drink enough of what she’ll be bringing home.
