My parents considered FDR as a savior or benefactor. Believed that 'til their death. Used the old term "Yellow Dog Democrats."

Almost disowned me when informing them, their son was no longer a Democrat! 'Persona non grata' for quite a spell.

I just put this list together; seems to fit here as well:

Trump on the issues:

“The Republicans walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions.....I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.”

“I’m a conservative on most issues but a liberal on health. It is an unacceptable but accurate fact that the number of uninsured Americans has risen to 42 million. Working out detailed plans will take time. But the goal should be clear: Our people are our greatest asset. We must take care of our own. We must have universal healthcare. “

“I’m “fine” with affirmative action.”

"This doesn’t mean a Trump presidency would lead to brown shirts on the street. But there is more to fascism than goose-stepping and military style uniforms, and Trump, like FDR, displays many such characteristics. So when people look at Trump’s agenda and claim “it can’t happen here,” they’re ignoring history that’s not even a century old. Not only could such things happen, they already have. "

Hysterical right to the bitter end.

Well, FDR was hailed as “The American Mussolini” when he first came on the scene.

I come from the same tradition, except it was my Granparents who were FDR new dealers and southern yellow dawg democrats. My Father would be a Reagan Democrat, I could not vote in the 80 election but by the 84 election, I was a Reagan Conservative.

Not mentioned above, but FDR prolonged the Great Depression by seven years.

Finally the economy was ‘rescued’ from economic depression by WWII.

Comparing the deportation of millions of ILLEGAL ALIEN INVADERS to the internment of 122,000 Japanese Americans is not the same.

The Federalist happens to be headed up by a CRuz BFF. No bias, there, pilgrim.

Have they written an article about any of the uncanny resemblances between CRuz and 0bama? First term Senators who run for Prez, etc?

Same or worse personality type in Trump, but no coherent ideology, so there’s no telling what direction he will go in.

The only sure way to guard against Trump is to roll back the enormous power of the government that he would be managing. History, even in the United States, shows that dangerous men dupe voters and take power. We should shrink government so that when they’re elected, they take as little power as possible.

Substitute Clinton, or Sanders, or Cruz, or whoever you've decided is unacceptable ... it reads the same way. Fedzilla has grown so far beyond Constitutional bounds as to make the Presidency itself a threat to the Republic.

The article could have been better. I have been reading James MacGregor Burns” biography on FDR.

One thing that I can see that Trump and FDR have in common is that FDR when he ran in 1932 had few specifics and was certainly not tied to any Ideology or Philosophy, and never really was.

But it was a different time and The Depression was in full swing.

Are these positions wrong?

From the article:

“He worries opening the borders will mean an influx of undesirables.”

“In May 1940, he warned of a “fifth column” in America (a military term for civilian rebels), and claimed refugees might be enemy agents.”

Now the other bits.

“Like Trump, FDR had little respect for the separation of powers.” - how does the author know this. Is enforcing current law violating separation of powers?

“FDR saw himself as a benevolent dictator, and his actions reflect that grandiosity. Trump has made a campaign of this same sort of grandiosity.” - again, based on what. Saying “same sort” doesn’t make it so unless “Making America Great Again” is the same sort.

” But FDR’s immigration ideas, summed up in his claim that immigrants ought to have “blood of the right sort,” were clearly prejudicial. So is Trump’s rhetoric about Mexicans.” - blatantly false. Trump never has disparaged legal Mexican immigrants.

“The president can order U.S. citizens who are abroad, like Anwar Al-Awlaki, to be assassinated without a trial. The National Security Agency allows the president to spy on political dissidents such as Faisal Gill (a Muslim Republican) and Nihad Awab (director of a Muslim civil rights organization), or even to wiretap news outlets like the Associated Press.” - I’m mixed on this. US citizens who side with the enemy should not be considered so. But again, it’s an assertion based on what? Trump wanting to curtail Muslim immigration and sending Muslim refugees back? I don’t see it.

“The only sure way to guard against Trump is to roll back the enormous power of the government that he would be managing.” - This has yet to happen at all. Government has grown without any relevance to Trump.
