Coffee Gurus of FR, please teach me to like coffee!

Posted on 02/15/2016 1:50:51 PM PST by Politicalkiddo

I cannot stand the taste of coffee. I love the smell of it, I love coffee flavored things like coffee ice cream, but I cannot manage to get myself to enjoy it as a beverage. I really want to learn how to like it, though. I enjoy most foods and drinks, but coffee is my next culinary challenge to surmount. Any advice for a coffee novice like myself? I know that the key to liking foods/drinks that you dislike is constant exposure, but I was wondering what is considered "mild" in the coffee world and something from which I can work my way up.

FWIW tea drinkers are procedure oriented, coffee drinkers WANT IT NOW!

Seriously tea drinkers get their panties wadded up about the temperature, the blend, the color, amount of cream or milk, the amount of sugar, whatever. It’s all procedure!

Coffee drinkers, HOT, BLACK and NOW!!!!

If you consider that a problem. I like to be able to down a pot of fully caffeinated tea before bed and then conking out. ;)

coffee has more long term negative effects on the body than beneficial.

it’s dehydrating to the body, it messes with adrenaline and other chemical balances. Folks don’t put 2+2 together to realize coffee negative effects. Try quitting after years of use - usually have headache and withdrawal symptoms.

Older folks swear by needing coffee in morning just to poop! ridiculous since if they drank more plain water, like 8-12oz each morning they would eliminate just fine without using coffee to stress their system into eliminating.

we do such crazy things to ourselves (coffee and so many other things) just because it’s the grown up thing or common thing to do.

I confess, I am one of those people.

PM me in spring and can set you up.
I don’t roast in winter, too cold outside for the roaster to work, and can’t roast inside due to smoke.

My latest kick has been Dallmayr prodomo that I found at TJ Maxx and Woodman’s. Best made as an espresso.

Stick with coffee ice cream.

Real coffee gives you coffee breath and brown teeth.

But alcoholics should drink coffee because it inhibits cirrhosis.

There is toothpaste that will address both of those issues.

French vanilla creamers, sugar, mild coffee (not the bitter Starbucks junk) and serve it chilled.

A few years ago, I ran across some great iced coffee at IHOP. Expensive for the first glass, but all you could drink. By the time I’d had 4 glasses, the unit cost was reasonable.

And if you travel to Germany, look for Wein Eiscafe (Viennese Ice Coffee). Cartons in the dairy counter. Coffee blended with ice cream and cream and served cold. Try making your own: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/wiener-eiskaffee-200828

Rule One - avoid Starbucks like the plague.

This is what I most commonly drink:

Buy it pre-ground, so you don’t have to buy a grinder. Or the store may have a grinder so you can grind it there.

Get some 100% Kona coffee and drink it black.

Heck ya! Why would anyone ruin a good cup of coffee with sugar. Gross!

Second the 100% Kona. NOT KONA BLEND but start with a little cream and sugar. 100% Kona rocks! Best roasted as a city roast.

Most people who dont like coffee, are of that opinion because of the sharp bitterness. By in large, that is caused by the acid in coffee. If you want to take the edge off, use a 1/4 to 1/2 pea size amount of baking soda. Really, it is a tiny amount. Put it in over the grinds or worse case, into the mug after pouring.

Avoid anything with “Dark” in the title. You will most likely associate that with burnt.

There is nothing you can do, you are a supertaster and coffee will always taste bitter.

What do you think of coffee flavored ice cream?
