Has FreeRepublic Jumped The Shark With Trump?
2/14/16 | OV

Posted on 02/14/2016 9:47:13 PM PST by OneVike

I have been a member of FreeRepublic since February 1998, and in all my years I have ever seen so many Freepers support, and defend such a leftist candidate as Donald Trump. In the old days, any candidate that spouted the rhetoric coming out of his mouth would have been received with unanimous hatred from Freepers.

Mitt Romney was met with scorn when he claimed to have changed and was more conservative than his record showed. However, The Donald says the same thing and he is allowed to wear his liberal record as badge of honor, because he has been born again. Never mind that his fruit smells like Skubala. Any Republican candidate in the past who supported partial birth abortion was considered dead on arrival with 99.9% of Freepers. Yet a vast number of Freepers today look at Trump's defense of PP, and attack the candidate who dares to bring it up at a debate.

Thinking I have stumbled in some black hole of Bizzaro World, I decided to spend most the night, after the debate yesterday, researching past posts and comments of many Freepers who support Trump. I must admit that I wasn't too shocked to see that not all, but the vast majority, of his supporters have joined FR within the last 8 years. However I pretty much only searched the opinions of his most ardent supporters.

Interestingly enough, the ones I researched, all demanded that both Houses of Congress go after Planned Parenthood for selling baby parts. Many of them even demanded that the House use their power of the purse to defund PP. Yet these very same individuals defend, and make excuse for Trump's defense of said abortion factory, or at least claim it's bothersome but will still support him. These same individuals, however, were demanding McConnell resign for failing to pass legislation in the senate defunding PP. I did similar searches on their opinions of various other topics that Trump defends which would normally be cause of revulsion from these supporters had it been any other politician.

Well, I must admit that I am rather stunned by the way they have so easily changed their stances.

Who would have known that those who accused Jimmy Carter of never meeting a dictator and communist he didn't like, would now tout that his endorsement of Trump is not Trumps problem, and some even claim it will help him with Democrat voters in November. So we are now to welcome a politician that will get votes from leftists?

I thought the idea was to win them over to conservatism, not to abandon our beliefs just to get them to vote for our guy. So when will Freepers decide we need to change our stances on topics like "Black Lives Matter" to get more blacks to vote for our guy, or maybe we can find a good Muslim candidate who has made billions and talks a good game. Hey, so what if he may support Sharia law, just think of all those Muslim votes we can get from refugees Obama shipped in and we could actually own Dearborn Michigan. There has got to be some great female politicians who support PP that we could get behind, After all, we do have a problem with the female vote, right?

Yea, I'm just an old timer with old time values from the days when The Donald was still giving money to the Clintons and laughing at Republicans for making such a big deal over BJs in the Oval Office. Yup, just a geezer who remembers the wall of separation set up by Jamie Gorelick to keep Clinton from being prosecuted over Witewater which led to the attack on 9/11.

I guess I'm a conspiracy believer who thinks 9/11 was Clinton's fault, not GW's, and that the Weapons of Mass Destruction the NY Times finally admitted existed were originally sold to the public by the Clinton's to help get the Democrats on board for the war on Iraq.

Those were the good old days when we used to rip apart fake politicians for trying too hard to fit into our club, instead of ripping the messengers for noticing a fake when we see one.

Yea, that was before FreeRepublic jumped the Shark.

He say he is self funded, but he is taking reimbursements it seems from those donations.

You do realize why he is taking the small donations don't you? Or you just like to lie?

“The facts are clear. I was born in Calgary. My parents — as a legal matter, my mother is an American citizen by birth. And it’s been federal law for over two centuries that the child of an American citizen born abroad is a citizen by birth, a natural born citizen.”—Ted Cruz There is a legal consensus on the issue. And the Naturalization Act of 1790, passed three years after the U.S. Constitution was written, said that “the children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens.”

A flat out LIE and he knows it... old 'original intent' Ted using an Act of Congress to claim what has NOT been federal law ever. Again, only Two US citizen parents giving birth to a child on US soil makes one 'natural born'...

Geeze I went back and watched that debate where he flat out lie and he so reminds me of bj and hilly Clinton... trained liars.

“Some of the greatest Christian warriors are those who converted late in life.”

So correct me if I am wrong, are you calling Donald Trump a Christian warrior, when he has stated on camera that he does not need forgiveness from God. That is the very essence of being a Christian, knowing you are a sinner, and that you are in need of a Savior, that Savior being Jesus Christ! In order to be a child of God, you must admit you are a sinner and needs God’s forgiveness in order to be born again! If I am wrong tell me where I am wrong at!

I watched his interview with the lady from CNN.

So, he says he’ll let some come back, legally, but for now, no citizenship. Not as good as I’d like, but we’ll have to see. It’s certainly not a deal breaker for me.

The ones with criminal records can’t come back. I’m good with that.

I haven’t changed my mind because I still believe that not as good as I’d like is still better than any of the others would do, which is nothing.

I’m not asking congress, I’m asking posters on this site, who seem to be defending PP. Let’s get this straight, IMO any support or defense of PP marks you as a scum bag pro abort

I disagree with Trump on many issues. I also do not believe him to be as “conservative” as so many with rose colored glasses believe him to be. Much of this show between the candidates on the road is kabuki, as I see it. Trump will do whatever he can to beat Cruz, but in the end, should Trump get the nod, he will be after Cruz for his “team” and Cruz will likely agree. Both need each other and both will “bury the hatchet” to make their goals become reality. I think Palin knows that, as well. It was her misfortune to have been saddled with marbles the last go around. She has grown since then.

What do you mean you are not asking Congress. They are the ones who keep using tax dollars to keep PP body parts in business. I am suppose to ignore reality? The only time I have yet to hear Trump mention it is when somebody either asks his opinion or outright accuses him of doing something that is not even on his agenda. Why has not the smartest guy in America set his legal skills onto turning over Roe v Wade?

I despise PP but I am forced by the long arm of government to fund the despicable business... I am tired and exhausted of the year in and year out chatter over the most evil business in the world.

Which is cruder. Metaphorically stating someone is "sleeping with the devil" or calling a man a "pussy"?

Welcome to American politics.

Granted, we no longer have congresscritters assaulting each other on the floor of the House with canes and desks, but crudity is deeply ingrained in politics.

Once upon a time, calling a man a "liar" would have gotten you an invite to a duel. Today, it is seen as a valid post on FR.

With all that Trump v Cruz supporters have posted on these boards the past few months, concerning the opposing factions, I'd say there is not much to be shocked or horrified at......not any longer.

“Sarah Palin knows both Trump and Cruz personally and professionally. To me her endorsement means a great deal because I trust her judgment.”

Mrs. Palin has a right to endorse anyone she pleases to! I have no objection to her endorsement, what myself and many other veterans did not appreciate was when her son beat his girl friend and held a AR-15 to her head, she blamed it on PTSD and never said he needed to accept responsibility for his actions! And although her son was in a combat zone, he never had any actual combat time! And being a Vietnam Vet, I know a little about PTSD!

Point of clarification: I like Sarah, politically. She holds the correct stands, most of the time. Her personal life, well, not perfect. Of course, Reagan had a wonderful political outlook. Even though his kids were assholes.

Look buddy, you butted in on my question to another poster who seems to be supporting PP.
I have never in my 59 years supported abortion, so I'm unable to understand those who have no problem with PBA, Trump said he supported it, but changed his mind, I have met people who used to support it but accepted Jesus Christ and changed.
What caused Trump's conversion? Trump believes in God, but hasn't sought forgiveness. I am very troubled by that, the conversion smacks of politics
