I knew this would happen. The principle of diminishing marginal productivity would kick in some time.

It really doesn’t hurt to put a few comments telling us about the post. When I see these links with no explanation, I immediately think- “blogpimp.”

Is Moore's Law dead? This Ars Technical article makes a pretty good argument that it is, or of not at least on it's death bed after 51 years. The problem is that they've run up against the resolution of what can be printed with optical transfer at 14 nanometers. You will have to read the article on the original site due to copyright constraints, so hit the link! -- PING!

Pinging dayglored, Shadow Ace, and ThunderSleeps for their ping lists.

Nevermind....I spotted the words “Moore” and “Dead” and got excited about something else. My bad.

I’m sure Microsoft anticipated this with their switch to per-core licensing in Windows Server 2016.

Must be this you were thinking of:

"Here lies the body of Leslie Moore
Four slugs from a .44
No Les, no Moore"

You were thinking more like:

“Here lies the body of Mr. Moore
He caught a disease from a two-bit whore
Here he lies and lies no more”

Below 22nm, design gets really tough.
10nm is unbelievably difficult on standard 193nm lithography.
Biggest problem is costs are going up and what you can charge is going down.
Not the way to make $$$ in semi.

BTW, I met Gordon Moore face to face.
Scary standing there next to a billionaire.
Very nice man.

IMHO Moore’s Law derives from two, more fundamental, factors:
  1. the fact that the cost of production of any product will be cut by about 25% each time more of that product is manufactured than was made in all prior history,

  2. the demand for digital circuitry has been so elastic that it has paid to invest in more efficient production technology at a rate consistent with Moore’s Law.
Until and unless the elasticity of the demand curve for digital processing becomes less, the geometric increase in the production of digital processing capability will continue. IMHO, there are billions of people who have scarcely begun to contribute to the elasticity of that demand curve - but who will. It seems a bit difficult to predict the death of the elasticity of demand for digital processing any time soon.

It may well be that the elasticity of the supply curve of transistors is declining. But other tech such as quantum computing, or something, seems likely to fill the void.

I believe that Moore's Law was based on 2-D.

There has been some work on 3-D chips.

I saw a claim a couple weeks ago that someone had a 16 terabyte SSD in a 2.5 inch form factor so they are getting all those bytes somewhere. They claimed speeds approaching 1000 times normal SSD. I seem to remember a price like $14,000.00.

I was speeding through FR and spotted this header.

In a quick glance I thought it said,”Mother in law really dead this time”.

I guess it’s time for a break.
