Why the Biggest Star Wars Movie Ever Isn’t Enough to Boost Disney

Disney just posted the best quarterly earnings in the company's history. So why was its stock down more than 4% in after-hours trading? Four letters: ESPN.

The Burbank, Calif. entertainment giant on Tuesday posted earnings of $1.63 per share, or $2.9 billion in total, for the quarter ending Jan. 2, beating analysts' expectations of $1.45 per share. The massive haul came in large part thanks to The Force Awakens, which has now grossed more than $2 billion globally, not to mention massive amounts of merchandising and licensing revenue. Disney's movie studio division made $1 billion in profit all by itself, an 86% increase year-over-year.

But the world long knew that Star Wars was going to be a huge hit, and investors typically don't reward good news when it's that predictable. Instead, Wall Street has been zeroing in on Disney's massive television business, of which ESPN is the crown jewel. The sports network is the most valuable channel on the television dial by a huge margin, earning Disney more than $6 in for every cable subscriber that receives it. But it's also a massively expensive enterprise. ESPN's costs are in part to blame for a 6% drop in profits at Disney's TV business, the only of Disney's four divisions to backslide this quarter.

ESPN cost them a ton losing subscribers

Nobody watches the liberal sports channel at their high cost

ESPN is (IMHO) a cess pool of nothingness. I would pay to have all instances removed from my system.

For those that like it, let them pay. It is interesting that ESPN is included as a “package”. Sort of declares its worth right up front.

Disney has rolled over and went to the Dark Side.

I agree—I haven’t watched ESPN in years because of their liberal slant in years.

Who cares what a bunch of metro-sexuals and women think about the “analysis”?

"You'll need this..."
"Because you don't think I can handle myself?"
"No, because I think you can."

having f...ts and transgenders on the kids shows now along with gay parents turned off the channel in my sisters’ houses.

And then in the last 20 minutes she manages to master Jedi skills that took Luke three episodes.

ESPN comprises guilt-ridden white liberals and affirmative action hires who embrace every Leftist viewpoint & cause, and who cater to minority, Spanish-speaking, and lesbian audiences. Unwatchable.

Media types claim that audiences care only about the games but it’s clear that a) ESPN has committed itself to the lockstep PC of the Northeast Media and b) its audience doesn’t share those views, is sick of hearing the harangues on race and homosexuality and is voting with its pocketbook.

Perhaps deciding to propagandize mutilation as "courage" put off a person or three? Maybe more?

I've deliberately avoided ESPN since, but was I was only a fairly selective viewer before the announcement.

Is the package ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Classic, and ESPN News, or just ESPN?

I hate Disney. I don’t support their crap. Didn’t see Star Wars. Don’t get ESPN. Good riddance Disney.

Perhaps more than that.
I remember what Rush said about Donovan McNabb, and how it was taken by their “leadership”. They’ve been PC and pushy since the 90’s.

That’s a huge plot hole in the movie. Overall, the movie wasn’t a bad popcorn flick but it was way overhyped!

I thought it sucked. Still... it was better than the last several movies produced by George Lucas.

The entire move was a mess. It was a politically correct mess.

There were a bunch of plot holes in the movie. I saw a list that someone compiled. My favorite was:

The entire planet is a junkyard with every ship stripped for salable parts, yet the Millennium Falcon starts right up?
