Ever since Iowa, Donald Trump has spent all of his time fighting the good fight on behalf of wronged victim Ben Carson. Trump says that he was robbed, too, of course, but his heart truly goes out to Carson. Why? Well, Carson's team told CNN on Iowa caucus day that Carson was leaving the campaign trail to go to Florida, and that Carson would be skipping New Hampshire and South Carolina altogether. CNNâs Jake Tapper and Dana Bash had the following conversation:
Tapper: "It's very unusual, to announce that you're going home to rest for a few days, not going on to the next site."
Bash: "Very unusual...Look, if you want to be president of the United States, you don't go home to Florida. That's just bottom line, that's the end of the story. If you want to signal to your supporters that you're hungry, that you want them to get out and campaign, you have to get out there too, it's very unusual."
Tapper: "Very unusual."
Wolf Blitzer: "Very significant news indeed."
CNN tweeted the news: "After the #IACaucus, @RealBenCarson plans to take a break from campaigning."
The Cruz campaign seized on this news and began telling precinct captains to tell potential Carson voters that Carson was taking a break from campaigning, and so they might consider moving their votes over to Cruz. Cruz later apologized to Carson, but that wasn't enough - Carson held an oddly-organized press conference in which he suggested that Cruz's tactics werenât Christian, and that Cruz ought to fire his campaign workers for their error. Trump, meanwhile, continued to claim that he had in fact won Iowa, but that Cruz cheated.
Well, now it turns out that both CNN and Cruz had it right.
Today, Carson announced that he wouldn't be heading to New Hampshire until Saturday night, for the Republican debate. The Washington Post also announced that his campaign had chopped 50 staff positions as "part of an overhaul and downsizing of his entire campaign." The Post continued:
Salaries are being significantly reduced. Carson's traveling entourage will shrink to only a handful of advisers. And instead of flying on private jets, Carson may soon return to flying on commercial flights. The employees being released - about half of Carson's campaign - mostly work in field operations and at his headquarters in Northern Virginia. Campaign officials, who confirmed the moves after The Washington Post obtained an internal memo about the layoffs, stressed that key aides in upcoming GOP primary contests will remain in place and that Carson is determined to stay in the 2016 race. But they acknowledged that Carson's funds have diminished as he has fallen from the top tier, forcing him to make sweeping changes to a campaign that swelled into a bustling operation of about 125 people.
All of that followed on Carson's campaign manager quitting at the beginning of January along with 20 other staffers.
This campaign is done, in other words.
And Carson kept all of this cutting secret, knowing he'd have to do it after Iowa. So who was the real fibber here? The Cruz campaign, which correctly forecast Carson's drop out, or Carson's campaign, which insisted that he wasn't going anywhere, then proceeded to slash half its workforce and remove its candidate from the campaign trail?
Carson suspended his campaign when one of the volunteers was killed and another injured. I think it was Jan 20th. Carson’s campaign people dropped the ball by not providing updates. Cruz simply took advantage of it.
Won't have any effect in the long run.
I can't imagine it will happen again this election cycle, everybody will be looking now for fake tweets, etc.
No. Body. Cheated.
And Cruz did not apologizing for “cheating.” He apologized for his campaign’s passing along the CNN news report.
“Cheating” implies that he took votes from someone. But Carson received the same number of votes as was forecast by the polls.
Stop spreading lies, would you?
By the way: Trump is spreading lies, trying to cheat Cruz out of winning the election. He keeps spreading the lie that Cruz is ineligible to run for president. Trump is a slimy, lying, shameless politician. Right?
In case you hadn't noticed, Trump is laying off Cruz now and is focused on the newest darling of the GOPe. If you showed the same enthusiasm for attacking the weak-kneed wimp known as Rubio, as you do for a hard core conservative like Cruz, you might actually benefit the Trump campaign.
The GOPe thanks you in advance for doing what they want you to do.
LoL Cruz got BS’ing caught deal with it.,
Have you ever run for office? You use ANY advantage you can. Cruz’s campaign didn’t make it up.. but they used the information to their advantage. Why wouldn’t they. Apparently one of those candidates is in it to win it and they other isn’t. And I like both of them.
Carson’s claim is childish nonsense. Thanks to Ben Shapiro for some perspective. We are in a digital world. People have iphones. They can instantaneously find out what is going on as all the major networks stream info constantly. And where were all the Carson people on the ground, on top of what was going on, making sure their supporters knew he did not ditch them, and setting the record straight!
It is ok to not support Ted Cruz, but what a lame excuse this is. This is presidential politics. The major candidates were on the ground, rallying their supporters on the day of the vote. Carson decided it was more important to fly to Florida for a fresh pair of skivvies. His decision to fly out on caucus day, is unserious. The reason he gave for bailing is even more ridiculous. The whole aftermath of course also exposes Trump’s volatility and lack of reasoning.
“Clintonesque don’t you think?”
Very. The similarity has been picked up by many of the talking heads.

Funny that you attack the one proven conservative in the campaign while ignoring the overwhelming weirdness and dishonesty of the Carson campaign. Carson is toast. CNN and Cruz saw it before everyone else. Damn them for saying so! We really need to be nicer if we're going to win vs. the Clintons.
My point and example stands.
Cruz’s goon squad embellished the report.
Really? How many campaign events has Carson attended since Iowa? Try ZERO.
That is an outright lie. They falsified nothing. They passed on information that was being broadcast on Twitter and on TV. Even the recordings never said Carson was quitting - one said he was "taking a break" from the campaign and the other said he was "suspending campaigning" - which he apparently was, since he hasn't had a campaign event all week. By the way, that is the same type of terms that were used when Carson took time off to do his book tour. No one objected when they said Carson was suspending his campaign then...
Gee.. poll says he’s behind the Jebster...
WOW...
I suppose there is nothing like celebrating having been in on the kill to make the “I told you so” crowd gloat. They now brag about their self-fulfilling prophecy when their acts no doubt assisted in his demise. I hope they feel good as they now celebrate over the dead corpse. Did Carson ever do anything to them to deserve this sick behavior?
Your guy FAILED to make the Goldman Sachs an issue when it was released that Trump had also received donations from them (which is totally hilarious considering the absurd dismissals of each of Trump’s donations to the most extreme LIEberals in DC and NY).
Next came the “birther” issue, another manufactured distraction fron the issues. You beat that drum until two states shut it down by showing Cruz complely eligible.
Then it was “mailer-gate”. The drones ran with that until it was shown that the same mailer has not only been used by the Iowa GOP, but also Rubio. It was quite unusual that the issue wasn’t problem with Trump supporters since they were the ones harping on it.
Now its the Twitter message from CNN that both Rubio and Trump were aware of and used. The selective outrage shows that it’s again just more TRUMPERY to prop up a progressive LIEberal verus an establishment RINO.

Carson was very clear when he suspended his campaign after the van accident. Cruz simply made up the narrative he wanted to right before the caucus. It’s a total fabrication to suggest that Carson was “leaving the race”.
Cruz is a cheat. I’m not going to back off it so you can either ignore me or not. But I’m not changing my mind.
He’s there today in NH, and that’s not the point. All the silly rationalization of trying to exonerate Cruz is not going to work.
So taking publicly available information and telling voters what you think it means is cheating and unethical and means the candidate should not be in the race? Well Trump better quit today. Because he certainly takes public information and puts his own spin on it to persuade voters to either support him or not support his opponents. His supporters do it too. How many times have I seen Trump supporters claim that Cruz supports TPP, despite his own statements that he opposes it? But they take the fact that he made one vote for TPA, and claim that vote shows that he is really for TPP, no matter what he actually says. That is actually much more dishonest than what you claim the Cruz campaign did in Iowa. So your phony outrage is a sign of hypocrisy and just an attempt to manufacture a "scandal" to try to damage Cruz.
