Tech Help, Please?

Posted on 02/02/2016 5:28:31 PM PST by ccmovrwc

My elderly parents are having an issue with malware on the new (Windows 10) laptop they bought themselves for Christmas. Specifically, they have a "Debug browser spyware 895-system32.exe" window that pops us when they open a MS Edge browser. Screen cap can be seen here: http://i68.tinypic.com/2zjm2ox.jpg

Malwarebytes did not help. Any other suggestions?

For the record, yes, I am logged in, my beeber is stuned, and all my base are belongs to whomever. :)

Did you run malwarebytes in safe mode?

I heard that some computers are preloaded with viruses.

I once got a really bad virus from a link at FR. The only way I was able to fix the bug was to get a root kit and fix it at the lowest level.

I can't remember all the steps, but I'm sure you can google 'root kit' and see if that resolves the issue.

No, but did run via chameleon. I will try again in Safe Mode.

I got my daughter a windows at Staples, and pretty soon it had some bug in it. Took it to the local MS store and they said “We can take a look and fix it for $xx dollars if you need it soon. If you can wait a couple of weeks we’ll take care of it for free.”

It was her new school laptop, and she could use something else in the meantime, so the wait was no biggie. I have no idea what they did. We have ESET security on most of our PC’s but the MS guy said the MS stuff works just fine. (of course he will say that!)

Yes, they fortunately did get a warranty. That may end up being our best recourse, as I am not a tech guru and don’t know how much help I can be!

Well, the first thing that worries me is that I've never heard of “tinypic.com” which is the link you want me to click on.

Try that, and if it doesn’t work do a system restore to before the last time you remember it working okay.

Backup whatever personal files they have and do a clean install from the manufacturer’s restore partition.

Repeat once a month or so.

Tinypic is just another website you can use to upload photos. Like Photobucket.

Get an excellent Antivirus app. I’m currently using Macaffee it came free.

Malware Bytes is a good free malware fix too.

Make doubly sure that their main everyday user account is not an admin account. That’s really the cause of the problem probably. Set up a separate admin account using the same password, or another password if you don’t want them to have access it.

That way they should be prompted if being attacked.

So far I’m pretty impressed with McAfee comprehensive approach. It checks about everything that comes from the web and really pretty much takes care of itself. Get their best package (about $50 per year) because you won’t be there but your folks will have to work pretty hard to get around McAfee. A password manager is also an excellent idea if they do their banking and stuff.

Root kit sounds like something I could do to seriously mess up their laptop, but I’ll keep it in mind. Thank you.
