Trump clearly had the votes to win Iowa but he didn't put the boots on the ground to get out the vote. Cruz had an epic ground game with 10,000 volunteers, data analytics, SUPER PACS, etc. It's amazing that Trump still came within a few percentage points on a shoestring operation. That's to Trump's credit but he still lost.
The Cruz campaign's pollster said Trump's numbers in the public polls were buoyed by a group of voters who do not typically vote in the caucuses but were strongly attached to Trump. These unlikely regular caucus voters needed a push. Trump did not have the infrastructure.
The depressing thing is if Trump didn't want to self-fund tens of millions of dollars for infrastructure comparable to Cruz, all he really had to do was ask. He could have easily asked for small dollar donations at his website. Asking his supporters to invest in his campaign and still kept his credibility against Super-PACS and special interests/lobbyists. A $20 donation isn't going to influence him.
” It’s amazing that Trump still came within a few percentage points on a shoestring operation.”
Yes, and wait until next week to see if your gloating wasn’t premature.
If Trump won and Rubio placed 2nd, it would be a worse situation.
I can’t believe Jeb and all these idiots are staying in the race.
I think most of the RINOs are happy with at least 4 years of Clinton as long as they can spurn Rubio or whoever pissed them off.
Yes lets be like Cruz who will take money for anything to get ahead. Wonderful. That is all we need a guy who will do anything for money.
Trump doesn’t need anybody’s money. I think that is better.
1. Cruz had most votes ever. Big ground game. A unique election nationally.
2. Skipping the debate. An error. Lot of people make up their minds the week of or even day of (!) the election. Those broke to Rubio.
“if Trump didn’t want to self-fund tens of millions of dollars for infrastructure comparable to Cruz, all he really had to do was ask.”
AKA. His bloated ego got in the way.
Iowa would have been a waste of money imo. Its not that important. If he doesnt start spending more now though he can only blame himself. Plus he never hit Rubio at all..not once last week. The open borders pimp needs to be hit an d hit hard
I don’t think the issue is cheap, I think it’s arrogance. Trump was certain he would win. He LIVES by polls and the fake polls showed him winning so he hung his hat on it. Further, he had big crowds at events and thought that translated into votes and, obviously, it does not.
He’s not stupid enough to spend his own money on the campaign. And he really doesn’t have enough money to do the full presidential campaign. Yeah
Jethro has it in the bag with a brokered convention.
He’s spending his own money so he’s being frugal, not cheap.
Iowa was always a crap shoot for him.
Watch what happens going forward.
Iowa has always been an anomoly for Republicans.
The winner is usually NOT the nominee.
And the total meltdown over a 5000 vote loss?
What about Christie and Bush?
What about Santorum and Huck who won the state?
Odd MSM narrative trying to pop the Trump campaign over trailing all of one delegate.
Next state. See how Cruz does in NH.
Agreed. There was a guy on the radio here in SF, big Trump fan, who said that he was told by the campaign that they didn’t need a rep in his caucus, then when he got there, and they asked for a rep from each campaign, there wasn’t anybody there to speak for Trump.
But don’t speak too soon. The Iowa caucuses have never really been a good indicator on the Republican side. Cruz could easily end up the 2016 equivalent of Santorum and Huckabee. Trump may have effectively kept his powder dry in order to focus on the upcoming states.
he’s not going to hit him hard now either. He JUST came out and said he likes Rubio and won’t attack him.
Just said it at the Scott Brown event.
Exactly right, the wealthy invest other people’s money, not their own. His Cheapness will cost him the nomination.
I just watched Trump in his presser and he looks totally defeated. This Iowa loss was a gut punch.
Trump’s biggest problem is not that Cruz beat him by 4 percentage points,
especially after the monumental effort Cruz put into Iowa.
His big problem is that Rubio came within 1 percentage point of his support. So,
he lose from above and below.
He never said he would win Iowa. He said he hope to. Big difference. Get your lies straight.
