Caucus Night Beer/Wine Thread

Posted on 02/01/2016 4:50:31 PM PST by markomalley

What are you drinking tonight for the caucuses?

As for me, I'm working on a Vienna Lager that I just tapped a couple of days ago. Lagered for 3 months.

Recipe:

Primary for a week in the 50s. Then into the keg and in the back of the fridge for 3 months. Turned out smooth.

How about you all? What are you imbibing to help pass the time this caucus evening?

My two youngest had a blast being sneaky and opening several cans of cherry rc. I’ll be drinking those with ice the rest of the night.

Looks difficult. You know, you can brew directly in the plastic bottle it comes in? Pour off about a cup, add a little sugar and yeast, shake, put on an airlock and let it sit for a week or two. Then decant into sanitized soda bottles. Add 1/2 tsp sugar for each 12 oz. seal tight and let sit for a week to condition. Comes out like a good Brit cider like Strongbow.

I've done that before. But I really like hopped cider.

Sitting here in the Philippines THIS MORNING (9:25 AM now), I am having my second big mug of fresh-brewed dark roasted coffee. By the time this thing is over, I will probably add some Irish Whiskey to it (or not)!

At least I will be awake!

Vote Trump!

If you want to give hopped cider a try, you can try Angry Orchard Hop-N-Mad-Apple.

I had no idea there was such a thing. Can you describe the taste?

Having a local microbrew here. Iron Spike Flatiron IPA. Wonderful stuff. Very hoppy with a bit of citrus.

We’re waiting to carbonate Logitech latest batch (once he disinfects the keg cylinder), so tonight for the Caucuses we’re drinking the commercial stuff in the beer fridge: Goose Island 312 Urban Wheat, Yuengling and our stand-by swill, Michelob Ultra and Natural Light (don’t hate me!). :-)

2014 La Vigne des Sablons Vouvray. Works well with the Parmesan crusted chicken breasts. I’d rate it in the upper 80s.

We may have to switch to Jameson (neat), depending on how our horse is running ;)

I needed a shock to the system, so I’m drinking cherry brandy with a touch of rum. The touch of rum has had a ‘ghost’ chili (supposed to be the hottest variety) steeping in it for some weeks. Just about a quarter of a teaspoon of that rum provides a lot of heat.

We took a trip to Ruidoso last June, where I was introduced to wine with chili in it. Two varieties of a green chili wine & one sweet red with habanero from the Relleno Bros. I found it at the Noisy Water Winery. Great stuff if you like a kick.

My aunt sent me a bottle of powdered habanero & I add scant amounts to our home brew wine as well. I like it hot!

When I'm out of my Vienna, I'm out. I will have to go to my commercial stock: Stella and Leffe. If I run out of that, I may have to get a case of Yuengling Black & Tan.

Brew Day is Saturday: a pale ale SMASH with Maris Otter and Cascade. I will begin a 1/2 gal starter on Thursday. It will be 2-3 more weeks before I can put it in a keg and another couple of weeks before it's good to drink. I hope that I can hold out.

I wish I had a Coopers kit on hand and would have thrown together a quick extract during Snowpocalypse, but, no....

Keep me on it. Who knows, I may turn the garage into a wine cellar.
