The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Yes we have.
Thanks AR. Are you hunkered down for the South Dakota winter?
Actually, not so bad so far this winter.
Temps have been warmer than normal, with lows mostly in the teens or 20s, and a few nights even above freezing. Highs have been as much as 60, though mostly in the 30s or 40s.
We do have snow cover in the garden, but around the house & barns a lot of mud in between patches of white, too.
Not much in the way of gardening going on at my place right now.
Still working on machinery prep for the upcoming commercial tomato endeavor. Box scraper is out of the shop, 1950 Farmall model C tractor is in the shop for a fuel system overhaul, ignition system tune-up, and some wiring harness repair.
Totally unrelated, #1 Marine daughter Leah made a surprise visit home, and will be here through the 7th. Sneaky sneaky.
Do you have any experience with hm 8849 tomatoes? I see good reports on them, but no seeds anyplace. I guess Harris Moran just sells bulk seed...
Nice weather, thanks for the pics.
You are welcome and good luck.
It’s looking like we might actually get one this year, if something else doesn’t pop up. So wanting to have more room for plants in the winter.
We had 2 snow falls all gone by the next day. Today was no school, but it’s all melted by now. Weather report is predicting another snowfall tonight-we shall see what happens.
I kept sweeping the side patio every 30 minutes, so that the new storm door wouldn’t be damaged by opening it, and keeping access to the basement kitchen where the trash cans and compost are.
My dream too. April 1, time to plant potatoes here.
Thanks for the link.
Like most of things in this world.
Your season is way ahead of us. That’s a lot accomplished.
So true!
Such a nice surprise. Haven’t seen my oldest daughter for over 2 years. Thank goodness for cell phones.
Just read up on the 8849, I view tomatoes like a new model car, give it a few years to see if it’s popular before wasting my money on it.
I grow for two specific generations of folks. The millennials that want something different like artisans and heirloom tomatoes and the greatest generation who are now to old to grow tomatoes for themselves who cherish old time favorite tomatoes.
