Having won an Oscar, I'm safe. Otherwise, I suppose I would have had to get my agent at CAA to write a letter assuring the Academy that even though I haven't produced a film in the past 10 years, there are three scripts on his desk he has not yet been able to set up, thus indicating activity in the past 10 years.
That is, unless you can count the short film I directed, which made it into several festivals, or the web series I directed, which was nominated for a Producers Guild Award. Or do the 15 years I've watched an average of 100 documentaries a year, as a volunteer member of the Academy and later a member of the documentary branch, qualify as involvement in the Industry?
I can't wait to see how this idea pans out.
What bothers me most is how insulting this is to black people.

Leaving aside for a moment that the Academy Awards are a bullspit award, the whole idea of this is just nuts. What if, say baseball, when it voted for its annual MVP awards was obligated to have a representative from the African American community, one from the Latino Community, one from the Asian community, on its short list? The answer SHOULD be, who was the best ballplayer (within the context of the award}, and not some exercise in political correctness. If no black actors merited an Oscar, so be it. This is just plain stupid.
Didn’t MLK say something about ‘content of character, not color of skin’.
I would think “best” actors are picked because, maybe, because of acting ability? Because a certain scene stood out among the rest?
Surely these followers of Dr King are not suggesting they be judged because of their skin color... surely not. They want to be judged strictly on their ability, correct?
Sounds like they want quotas “according to skin color”... the very thing King was against.
I didn’t see one Pygmie at the Oscars. Neither did I see ANY Micronesians. What a bunch of racists.
Then again I didn’t watch it.
“And the best black for being black in a movie goes to...”
Affirmative Action for Hollywood actors is next?
I am for equal rights. I am against preferential treatment, especially when someone screams that they are the victim.
Preferential treatment is not equality.
I don’t think they have enough awards to the over 65 age group. Age discrimination.... all old folks should boycott!!!
