If the doctor told me today that I had only one year to live it would be like be given an eternity to live. The next 364 days will take forever to pass.

Since 1952, the presidency has been the property of each party for exactly two consecutive terms, with ONE exception. Ike held it for the republicans for two terms. Kennedy/Johnson for two. Nixon/Ford for two. Then came Reagan, who knocked out Carter, and enabled Bush I to extend Republicans to three terms. Two for Clinton, Two for Bush II, and now Obama.

My point. The standard political pattern for sixty-four years, has been two terms per party. Only a transcendental figure like Ronald Reagan has been able to break the pattern. I do not feel that Obama is anywhere near Reagan's league in this regard. So, either the Republicans have a inside track to victory in November, or there will be an tectonic shift in American politics that will allow a Democrat to win. The results in November will be a signal of where we are as a nation.

Still, that is a lot of millions of seconds. NOBODY can hold their breath that long.

But there will be one long exhale as the last second ticks away.

There used to be a “countdown” for days remaining in service for us young and somewhat reluctant warriors (remember, the draft was ALWAYS hanging over your head), and as that last day approached, the term “FIGMO” came up more and more frequently, especially once the rotation orders were cut. For those unfamiliar with the term, it expanded out into, roughly “Forget it, I Got My Orders”.

Then the orders get canceled, and you are on an involuntary extension, in which the phrase became “OMGIF”, or “Oh, My Goodness, I’m Fooled!”

Says the guy who served four years two months and twenty-four days. The four years I owed my country, the two months and twenty-four days were somebody else’s time.

I am counting down until the last official day he is President. If I am not in a re-education camp by then, I’ll be having some friends over. We may imbibe libations and smoke stogies depending on who we have elected to replace him.
