"The decision will need to be made sooner rather than later because of the ballot deadlines," said Clay Mulford, who advised Ross Perot's third party run. "You'd really need to get started no later than probably the beginning of March."
And in theory, Trump could also seek the nomination of an existing minor party that already has some ballot access such as the Libertarian Party. But it's not unclear that any third party is a natural match for the kind of campaign that Trump has been running this this cycle.
Is it doable?
Successfully launching a third-party bid is complicated and tedious, but it's definitely doable -- especially if you have money.
Trump would need to dig into his wallet to build signature-gathering operations and get on the ballots in all of the states -- a process that would likely cost tens of millions of dollars.
But it's not clear if the billionaire real estate mogul is really willing to shell out.
Trump has been surprisingly stingy so far this cycle. As of the last filing deadline, Trump had only spent about $2 million of his own money -- the other $4 million the campaign spent were donations from supporters.
Though he's recently talked a big game about TV ads, Trump hasn't written big checks yet to go up on the air -- he's only run radio ads so far.
If he doesn't want to spend his own money, he could start fundraising in earnest. But that would go against his promise to be a "self-funding" candidate.
How much would it hurt the GOP?
A Trump third-party run would be very bad news for the Republican Party.

I would love to see the “deal” that Trump signed saying he would not go 3rd party. If what he says is true and he is up against ‘stupid” deal makers, that deal should enable him to take over the Republican party or ace them out in a 3rd party bid.
NOPE!!! If the GOPE or the RINO base want to kick Team Trump out, that’s one thing...but Team Trump is staying where they are and fighting this one out...Trump doesn’t walk away from a fight, and they don’t know just how many supporters Team Trump has...
By now we should all realize that if trump runs third party we get hillary.
We need to light a huge fire under that asses of the GOP-e to makes sure they treat Trump fairly so we don’t get hillary.
I don’t WANT this to happen, but if voters can spell “Murkowski”, they can spell “TRUMP”.
How would it work? Say hello to President Hillary Clinton. The Federal power bureaucracy would remain in the destructive grasp of the nihilistic Left.
I will hand out wristbands to anyone.
“A Trump third-party run would be very bad news for the Republican Party.”
And excellent for President-elect Hillary ...
Bingo.
yep, that was the plan between bubba and Trump. hitlerry will will in that scenario..
It would mean Obama II via Clinton II.
Why spend any money when you're the subject of every network and cable news show 24/7?
I think there will be a shit storm and end to the Republican Party should they attempt that.
I don’t think Trump will go third party. At this point he’s still in the running for the GOP nomination. If and when he reached a point where it didn’t look like he’d win it then it’ll be too late for a third party run.
“By now we should all realize that if trump runs third party we get hillary”
I don’t believe this at all.
Why would Trump run 3rd party when he has a massive and growing lead? that makes no sense.
Some say.. but the GOPe might screw him at the convention!
If the GOPe somehow manages to screw Trump at the convention... it's already to late by then to mount a 3rd party run. The GOP convention isn't until July 18th of 2016. That's WAAAAAAY beyond the cut off’s to get on the ballot running 3rd party.
Trump is running as a Republican!
Is the GOPe considering drafting Mitt Romney for a 3rd Party GOPe tricket?
N O T
Why is Trump worried about the GOPe not being nice to him, he is beating them bloody, his agenda for going third party is not at all clear, it all seems somewhat nefarious to me.
