On Monday, in a press release, Donald Trump called for a "complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States." Itâs the latest in a series of envelope-pushing statements, which, according to pundits, were supposed to have killed off Trump's presidential candidacy long ago. We keep thinking Trump has gone too far. And, as measured by polls, we keep being wrong.
Maybe it's time for those of us who have predicted Trump's demiseâreporters, liberals, moderate Republicansâto face an unpleasant possibility. Trump isn't out of touch with the electorate. We are. Trump speaks for a plurality of today's Republicans, and many independents as well. That's just as true on the subject of Muslims as on other topics. One of America's two ruling parties is controlled by voters who are ready to turn the government against a religious minority.

But he gets it.
Seems well worth quoting. He gets it.

Exactly. Shut it down until we can figure out how to reform immigration to keep out the bad guys. The other option is spend months (or longer) to figure it out and get nothing done while the border is wide open.
At least if you shut it down, those that want it opened up will work to figure it out, as opposed to block reform.
Well he sorta gets it.....but he thinks Trump is appealing to us because we’re racist rednecks.
The reporter sees Islam as a religion. It is primarily a political entity not very different from communism which can also be defined as a secular religion with the state as God.
Yeah.
Exactly. But he gets it. Aside from the leftist spin on things.

I can not read the article. It is behind a pay wall.
That’s a shame.
It’s a pretty long article, but I am not going to post it all. Maybe someone else will, but I’m just sticking with what I posted.
(sorry)
I completely agree.
I hadn’t realized until I just read it this morning, that a president is 100% within his power to do something like this.
Completely so.
You are correct. If we could get out of people’s heads that it is a religion we could go a long way.
Me too.
I don’t think it’s that the American electorate is a band of racist brigands. What’s happening here is exactly what the conservative media warned of in 2008. The political pendulum is exactly that: put in a hardline left-winger, and eventually the electorate tires of the socialist bullshit. Even those middle-of-the-roader’s get fed up with it and side with a candidate who espouses the views of the majority, which is pulling the political winds back to the right.
What the American people and the world seem to forget is that American presidents are not required to sit for 2 terms! While historically we’re about 50/50 on multi-term presidents, what we need now is a staunch right-wing American president to fire up the American muscle, like a political steroid, and after 4 years, hang it up and let someone a little less bombastic swoop in and take over.
As I see it right now, a Trump/Cruz ticket would be ideal.
>>If we could get out of peopleâs heads that it is a religion we could go a long way.
If a Catholic says that he is against abortion, the media says that he wants women to die in childbirth.
If a Baptist says that the Earth is 6000 years old, he is anti-science and doesn’t believe in fire.
But, if a Muslim says, “ we will kill you and take your women and make them give us 8 children each” and then beheads someone on YouTube, the media says that he isn’t serious.
