Is Your Irrational Fear in the Top 10 of Phobias?
Yahoo ^ | 12-4-15 | saramurphyme

Posted on 12/05/2015 11:38:53 AM PST by Graybeard58

1. Acrophobia (heights) 2. Arachnophobia (spiders) 3. Claustrophobia (enclosed spaces) 4. Ophidiophobia (snakes) 5. Thalassophobia (deep water) 6. Necrophobia (death) 7. Glossophobia (public speaking) 8. Coulrophobia (clowns) 9. Trypanophobia (needles) 10. Entomophobia (insects)

Other phobias ranked on the list are a bit more out of the ordinary. Trypophobia, the fear of objects with irregular patterns of holes, came in eleventh, while lepidopterophobia, the fear of butterflies, ranked 18th. Perhaps the most meta of phobias, phobophobia, the fear of being struck by your fear in a totally unsuitable moment, hits the list at number 26, and pediophobia, a fear of dolls that is just plain logical to children of the ’80s who saw the movie Child’s Play at much too young an age, came in at number 28. Last on the list, at number 42, is the ironically multisyllabic fear of long words, hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. (We did not make this up. hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is not only a real word, but also a truly delightful song.)

So not afraid of clowns, entertainment or political. However I refuse to find them funny.

I’m not supposed to wax our laminate floor but I still get on my hands and knees like my grandma and mom did, to scrub and dry it with vinegar and water. :) Does that count?

Well I never did anything like that to him, but karma caught up to him, not that I am happy about it. Our company was hit hard by the recession to the point where people were being laid off, then me, leaving only my boss.

He was doing a ballast change on a 277 volt system, something he was unqualified for, alone and didn't lock out the breaker, someone turned the switch on cooking his finger and and jolting him hard enough to break his shoulder blade on the lift. I told him I was sorry about his injuries but he won the contest for stupid.

“In my youth, I ignorantly walked I-beams without fall protection, wet rubber boots and arms full of tools and all.”

I slipped while walking on top of a sloped I-beam on a Butler building one morning while the dew was still on it, when I was about 18. Probably only 20 feet up. Thereafter I learned to straddle it and walk on the lower flange of the beam until it got dry. Old, worn boots.

I think "fear of death" should be "thanatophobia" (thanatos = "death"). Nekros means "dead body" so "necrophobia" would be more properly applied to fear of zombies.

I don’t have any irrational fears. My fear of being in the passenger seat while a teenaged boy drives is entirely rational.

2. Arachnophobia (spiders) 3. Claustrophobia (enclosed spaces)

I had a closed MRI done recently.

I kid you not, there was a freaking spider in there.

If anyone on here should have arachnophobia, it should be me. I almost lost my left arm to a black widow bite about twenty years ago. She was in the sleeve of a leather coat hanging in my closet.

I did not even know I had been bitten until later after my arm had swelled up to Popeye proportions and the fangs were found in the epicenter of the bite. . . and later the body of the spider was found in the sleeve of the coat. My arm had to be surgically drained of puss and packed until it healed over several weeks. I still have missing muscle mass near my left elbow in my forearm from the damage.

However, I have no fear of spiders to this day, nor do I suffer from any of the other phobias on the list. I am, however, absolutely terrified of another Liberal Congressional majority, or another Liberal Presidential administration. Do those count? To my mind, neither of those fears certainly are not "irrational."

Months ago a friend on FB posted a cartoon of a mother giraffe and her baby. The baby was climbing the mother’s neck. The caption was , “spider”.

I had to have a brain MRI done and I freaked out. They had to postpone it, I got a drug and open unit the next week. Did fine. The dr said they did not find anything. Then he said, “you have a brain and it is fine.”. I had to laugh.

I’ve done 60’ to change lamps at a ballfield with a dual boom trailer lift with 4 outriggers. Even wearing a harness, I’m still uneasy about being that high up. Of course, a good, healthy fear makes you work safer. Just concentrate on the task, and make all your movements slow and deliberate.
