Bill Nye demolishes climate deniers: “The single most important thing is .... climate change."

On Nov. 10, Bill Nye will release a new book titled “Unstoppable.” As only Bill Nye can, he uses the book to explain the science behind climate change, debunks popular myths, and asks readers to take action in their own lives to create a sustainable future. The book is shot through with optimism, but Nye has no illusions about what lies ahead. The message is simple: Climate change is real; humans are causing it; and we have no choice but to build a better and cleaner world.

Salon spoke with Nye about his new book and about his broader intentions. We asked him what he thought about climate deniers and the persistent anti-science demagoguery around this issue. Our conversation is below and has been edited for clarity and length.

So why did you write this book? Why now? And what’s your central message?

My goal is to change the world! Really, that’s what I’m trying to do. Obviously, this book isn’t going to change the world, but it is part of the bigger idea that we all have to think optimistically about this. We’ve got to go into this knowing we have a hard challenge but that we’re going to win this fight, and we’re going to save the earth for humanity.

Sorry but there is 0.04% co2 I n atmosphere- man produces just 3.4% of that and that mean the Co2 from man comprises just 0.0036%

Those numbers are not In dispute- you can find those numbers anywhere on the net- in science journals- I’m not just pulling them out of nowhere-

The3 heat that doesn’t leave earth is NOT due to man’s CO2- not sure why you’re even bringing that up?

There is no need to find a win win- man is not causing climate change- period- there is nothing man can do to affect the climate- Even if he saturated the atmosphere with 20-30 percent CO2 there still would not be enough because 3/4 of the heat escaping would go right past the Co2, and only a small fraction of that heat would actually makes it’s way back to earth via back radiation and again would quickly reach equilibrium- We’re not even producing enough CO2 to = 1%, Not even enough to = .1%, not even enough to = .01%

If you are asking for a solution ,then please explain to everyone how just 0.0036% of our atmosphere can be causing climate change=-

That heat is not being back radiate to earth- and CO2 has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that that heat remains there- there is NOT enough CO2 to absorb that heat and back radiate it back to earth where the climate would then change- That is the whole point of this issue- The CO2 is not preventing that heat from escaping- it can’t- there simply isn’t enough of it- there isn’;t even enough CO2 when you combine man’s and nature’s CO2 which stands at just 0.04% of the atmosphere

Yes there is- they have devices which measure CO2 entrapped heat that gets back radiated to earth- again, there is so little of it that it can’t possibly be causing global climate change

Again- to simplify this, it’s like taking a thimble of water that is 0.0036% the volume of an Olympic sized pool, making it 2-3 degrees warmer than the pool, and claiming the thimble of water just caused catastrophic temperature change In

I was addressing the solution to the problem on both sides, which is the endless need to throw misleading information out which changes no one’s mind, because frankly it is a huge waste of everybody’s time, money and energy.

Like it or not you have a government who has bought into humans causing climate change. They are right in the sense that added CO2 contributes a bit to atmospheric heat retention. It doesn’t create hazardous conditions, but you will NEVER be able to convince them of that.

You are allowing them to waste your money on unicorn farts because all you do is say nanana I can’t hear you. That’s your choice to make, but you could try steering the nanny state’s efforts toward something that benefits you and the rest of mankind. Which is the best outcome you could ever hope for given the scientifically illiterate ruling class. But you seem to be having too much fun with ‘facts’ that don’t explain anything or change anyone’s mind.

what exactly are you suggesting we do about it other than try to educate the public and those in office (YES I’ve written to many senators and governors about this issue stating facts for them)

But what specifically more can we do again?

It is never a waste of tiem and effort to state truth- it may be a losing effort, but it’s still the truth, and more and m ore people are becoming aware of the truth through efforts of some senators and congress people who are getting the facts out there-

No sir that’s not all I’m doing- not by a long shot- As I said, I ran a blog awhile back working with Senator Inhoffe, Marc Morano and other blog owners who all at least made the effort to get information to congress to inform them that the climate change hype is nothing but a lie- We cited facts, and we linked to science reports that stated the facts that refute the lie that man is responsible for climate change- Some senators we heard back from- and some used the information they were given to respond to advocates on the floor of congress- Ted Cruz, Inhofe as I mentioned, and a number of others as well
