Five theories about why middle-aged, white Americans are dying at such shockingly high rates
National Post ^ | November 6, 2015 | Ariana Eunjung Cha, Washington Post

"Half a million people are dead who should not be dead," Angus Deaton, the 2015 Nobel laureate in economics told my Post colleagues Lenny Bernstein and Joel Achenbach.

Deaton, an economics professor at Princeton, was talking about the stunning finding that he and his wife, Anne Case, made while analyzing U.S. death data from the past few decades. The researchers found that the mortality rate for white men and women ages 45 to 54 with less than a college education took a sharp turn upward in 1999 - a disconcerting reversal that has been virtually unheard of in advanced countries.

To put that number into perspective, Deaton estimates that a half-million deaths is "about 40 times the Ebola stats." He added, "You're getting up there with HIV-AIDS."

The couple's study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this week, offered a number of possible reasons that this might be happening. And since its publication, other experts have weighed in on other trends that might explain this phenomenon. Below is a look at five of their theories. Many of them have to do more with psychological distress than traditional causes of death such as heart disease or lung cancer.

Sounds like what we call "French toast".

You're even worse. It's 11:00 EST and now I have to have a French Toast and bacon sandwich with syrup.

White people have had a target on their backs for at least a half century. We see the full fruition of this assault in such things as “white privileged” “white guit” and “micro aggresions.”

Those of us who are strong have been able to insulate ourselves from this cultural socio-economic assault, but if you are poor and uneducated, it would be easy to internalize all the negative messaging designed to degrade and undermine “whiteness,” producing a generalized sense of worthlessness and despair.

Once so weakened, destructive lifestyle habits and negative self imaging creates the formula for early mortality.

Concerning rage....there’s a lot of us middle-aged, white people out there who are mad because WE are being made out as the ultimate villain by certain sections of society and WE’RE tired of it. We see the news and what we view as a bias and injustice against us and it enrages us. Constant boiling anger produces high blood pressure, which is a huge cause of heart attack and stroke. Couple that with a lifestyle that isn’t the healthiest...and you have a problem.

As for despair...a lot of people my age are looking around at society, the state of the world, and their own sphere of influence and they realize...things are NOT going to get better. If you’re in a position where you’re approaching your mid-50’s, you find that you’re under-or-un-employed, and you also come to realize that no one wants to hire you (no matter how hard you try) for a better position BECAUSE you’re a 50-ish white male...that can tend to make one fall deeply into despair.

John Steinbeck once wrote, “A sad soul will kill you far quicker than any germ.”

Thanks... I wonder if God has let the USA go... I know my worship/love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the center of my being.

Our neighbor dropped dead of a heart attack on Halloween night in his yard. He died on the way to the hospital. 52 years old. The funeral was yesterday. Everyone is still in kind of a state of shock.

White people get married more, too. “Relationship breakup rate” would probably be a useful statistic.

Yes I too refuse to take statins. After taking Crestor I had muscle and joint weakness/pains

The untold results of heavy booze consumption....i.e. liver cancer, cirrhosis, etc.

Throw in smoking tobacco and other stuff.

Consider the drug abuse factor as shown below.

Driving under the influence of booze and/or drugs.

Lack of self control can over ride good genetics.

It is hard on a person being pissed off all the time. If you are working to provide the Escalades, big screen teevees and smartphones for someone else you can't lavish on your own family, that gets to a person after a while.

You are so right! We had to give up our house and move into an apartment complex, large majority of immigrants there. It's funny how they all have nice new cars and when I walk around in the evening you can see they have TV's barely fit in the unit. I know they are all being subsidized by our taxes.

If you get "memory loss and confusion" you are going to make bad decisions related to work, family, finances and health

I was taking statins 20 years ago...and couldn't remember my own phone number or read my own writing.

when I stopped I got better.

As a proud member of the Elderly class; I believe this is similar to the phenomena observed in Korean War POW Camps:

US Soldiers who were POW’s in NorK/Chinese camps, who were neither injured nor ill, simply lay down on the ground and were dead within 24 hours.

They called it “GiveUpItis”.

When you see what is being done to the (formerly) greatest country on Earth; plus, what is being done to your own personal life and the lives of your family and friends; it probably causes some people to just “give up”.

I simply stay PollyAnna-ish and thank God for the opportunity to experience this life - Good, Bad and Indifferent.

And I do feel bad for those who have chosen to give up. We should all try to give positive encouragement to anyone we know in that position.

How many of these people are women who had abortions at an early age and now are facing breast cancer?

Individual responsibility. If you engage in booze, drugs, and processed food, you will statistically die sooner. Boo freakin hoo, stop with the sob stories.
