Every version of the Surface Book sold out on Microsoft’s online store

With Satya Nadella now steering the ship up in Redmond, Microsoft has actually become an exciting company to keep an eye on. This was plainly evident last week when Microsoft introduced a slew of new hardware products, including new Lumia devices, a new version of the Microsoft Band, and a new Surface Pro tablet.

Not bad, but the real star of the show was a product that nobody saw coming; a hybrid laptop Microsoft calls the Surface Book. Equipped with a detachable 13.5-inch display packed with 6 million pixels, the Surface Book is an intriguing product both from a hardware and design perspective.

Starting at $1,499, the Surface Book isn’t cheap, but consumers seem to be really excited about Microsoft’s first foray into the world of laptops. According to Windows Central, every single version of the Surface Book on Microsoft’s online store is now sold out. Needless to say, it appears that Microsoft may very well have a hit on its hands.

File this under a good problem to have but it looks like Microsoft has temporarily stopped pre-orders for all Surface Book models. Over the last few days, the Core i7 variants began to shift from pre-order to ‘Email me when available’ and now it is all variants of the new two-in-one device.

I’m definitely interested in the surface book, though I may wait for second generation.

Starting at $1,499, the Surface Book isn’t cheap....

That's an understatement!! Were it not for the price tag, I'd be very interested in buying one.

As is, I'll pass and wait for the price to drop somewhere in the next six months. For $1,499 I can build at least two i7 desktops for home, which is where I do most of my compute tasks.

Out & about, my smartphone handles all those needs just fine.

Yeah I agree. As good as it looks and how much I would love to purchase one, my current laptop and desktop work just fine, so I really cannot justify the expense. However, for those in the market, I would recommend a look.

Yep its the same problem as Apple a nice product but that way overpriced..

it like a car..is it a business tool or a status symbol? ... if you really use computer or a car as a tool you have to look at cost of turning it over ever few years and balance out cost vs need for a given feature..is it a needed feature or is it a luxury feature

I'd be curious to know where Microsoft see's itself competing against Apple in the notebook/ultrabook space.

I'm not sure because I haven't look at the prices of Apple's notebook offering(s) in awhile but it seems to me that Microsoft has flipped the tables on Apple, meaning Microsoft's now the more expensive option of the two.

Agree with your cost assessment approach.

Hey, I drive a 13 year old SUV, and am using a < 8 month old computer right now. I've probably built 8, 9, 10+ different desktops in the same amount of time.

I'm doing something wrong here! ;-)

I used to roll my own all the time then I found it was more effective just to buy a base machine with right MB CPU combo and upgraded ..best deal was to find a return...usually more cost effective by a wide margin

but now switch to laptops as daily drive...

Way, way, WAY back in the late 1980's I started building my own, mostly because it was far cheaper than buying one pre-built.

At that time a typical 286/12mhz AT with a 20mb hard drive, 2mb of RAM and an EGA video card & monitor was going for about $2k easily. I built the same thing for just over $900 at that time.

Somewhere around 1997/1998 I purchased parts to build two computers, which then sat --- for two years --- unbuilt because I didn't have the time to put them together. I ended up buying a Dell instead. Was happy with the first Dell, so after a year or so I bought a second.

I'll spare you the details of the horrors of that second system --- including the time the monitor sparked and caught fire while I was sitting at my desk in my home office. That happened less than 30 days after I purchased it and Dell was completely useless in addressing the issue or replacing the blown monitor. The computer also had its share of issuess (2 power supplies, memory going bad) which Dell was also useless in addressing.

I went back to building my own after that, mostly because I'd choose far better components than those used in mass produced PC's and because building my own isn't just cheaper, I actually have fun doing it.

Sent oldest son off to college in August with a new laptop and a gaming rig that I built for him, knowing he'd meet up with a bunch of gamers while away. Thankfully he keeps his grades up (he's in an Honors program at Western IL University) and to hear him tell it he has the fastest computer of anyone in his group and they always use his to stream via twitch when they're playing.

His gaming rig is a mini ITX format SFF PC with 16gb memory, dual SSD's, a GEForce GTX 970 video card, the latest Haswell i7 and is liquid cooled. It looks pretty darn good too in a Cooler Master Elite 130 SFF case with a 750 watt modular power supply by Corsair. I love building these things. His gaming rig is a beast. I'm building another one for myself this weekend. :-)

> Yep its the same problem as Apple a nice product but that way overpriced..

Without actually wanting to start an argument :-) I would suggest that "way overpriced" really means "too expensive for me", and that's fine too, but different.

"Overpriced" in a free market means no one will buy it because its value is not worth the price. That is CLEARLY not the case here. They're selling like hotcakes, and I guarantee you that most of the people getting them are NOT stupid fools or fanbois.

Some buyers see the "value" in the newness and cool looks, others in the performance, others in the fact that it's the first real laptop from Microsoft... "value" is different things to different people. You don't see the value to justify the price, and that's your option.

But "way overpriced"? Hardly.

Same true of Apple gear. If it was "way overpriced", it would be sitting on the shelves unsold.

Someone must have a credit card with 0% interest and bought this Surface Pro. I will wait and what the completion brings at a lower price.

I started building many years ago after a similar experience with HP. I’m going to surprise my daughter with a water cooled gaming PC build for Christmas this year. She’s always wanted her own, and I’m tired of kicking her off mine. I’m going to use it as an opportunity to teach her to build. Good to meet another custom builder Freend.
