A longtime American wardrobe staple is in danger of extinction

Blue jeans are increasingly going out of style, and even industry heavyweights like Levi's and Gap are taking notice.

Teens are now buying more gear from Nike and Lululemon over denim classics from brands like Abercrombie, according to a recent Piper Jaffray survey on teen spending.

Levi's CEO has admitted that the company is threatened by the athleisure trend of wearing yoga pants, Bloomberg reports.

"We’re scrambling," Bloomberg notes CEO Chip Bergh told analysts last year. "I mean, there is a big difference between the product that we’ve got on the floor today and what the consumer is looking for. And we just flat-out missed it."

Bloomberg reports that Levi's, which is the world's most iconic denim company, stuck to its core product instead of adapting to consumer trends.

As a result, this has cost the company. Bloomberg notes sales have dipped from over $7 billion to $4.8 billion over the years.

"As we saw ‘casualization’ continue even further, the customer basically told us that they had enough denim until something really unique and innovative came along,'" NPD analyst Marshal Cohen told Bloomberg. "We really saw the denim industry and denim retailers basically turn their nose up on the customer and say, 'We don’t care what you really want, we’re going to tell you what you want.'"

Jeans are the coldest item of clothing to wear in the winter and the hottest to wear in the summer. In fact, most britches are sweaty to wear any time of the year. I wear skirts and dresses winter and summer.

Could it have anything to do with outrageous prices?

My wife gets mine from LL Bean...prices are right ($39.95) and they look great! Never thought I could find a better pair of jeans than Levi 550’s, but the LL Beans are much better quality and fit!

I remember not very long ago when I could get a decent pair of Levi’s for $15.

Don’t like blue jeans. Never did.
They are uncomfortable. (and it’s not because I’m obese. I weigh about 100 lbs)

So do I. I don't even own a pair of jeans. For yardwork and camp, I have a pair of my daughter's old Coast Guard uniform pants.

What do you consider to be “outrageous”? I just purchased 2 pair Levi 501s at JCPenney for #$39.99 each. That was more than reasonable in my opinion considering a pair of Levi jeans typically last me anywhere between 1 to 2 years.

Wrangler jeans at walmart are $14.

I never worry about wrecking them.

I’m not even that overweight, just typical middle age changes, and I can’t find a decent pair of jeans. I had 2 really good pair and when they completely wore out I went shopping 4 times spending hours in the dressing rooms only to find 2 pair that fit “OK” and the one I returned after wearing for an hour I kept having to hike them up at the waist..if you want to call it waist as most of them sit below it these days. I ordered some through JCPenney, classic VB jeans with reviews all saying middle aged women like the fit. I coudln’t believe when I received them and tried on they were made so weird that I couldn’t even walk in them. Not enough fabric at the crotch or something, weird.

Might be because Levi’s quality sucks now.

I see all the nearby Amish men with the pants that are made by their wives... I am jealous. They have a lifetime repair policy for a lot less that $235/pair.

The article says Levis is sticking with tradition. Since when is "tradition" foreign-made jeans with spandex?

100% cotton jeans might aren't as stretchy as the new stuff, and they don't expand to account for putting on a few pounds. Besides that, my skin is sensitive to spandex, polyester, and all the other stuff in anything but 100% cotton sweats or jeans.

And, besides that, well made 100% cotton jeans last forever! And after that, they get some years as cutoffs.

LOL.....good jeans [especially when you *need* to have them]....are a *staff of life*.
If I were you...I’d convert and join the Amish sect
I’ve done far more, for less, in my life. ;D

THAT is a great story. How funny that your mom didn’t even wear jeans, and now her jeans - and her story - will be in the Levi museum.

I love shopping estate sales for “treasure” - you just never know what history and stories you might discover.
