Californias wrenching yearlong legislative debate over the right to die culminated Monday with Gov. Jerry Brown signing into law a bill making California the fifth state to permit physician-assisted suicide for the terminally ill.
As a Democrat and former Catholic seminarian, Mr. Brown was caught between two opposing sides of the right-to-die debate, and had given little indication of whether he would sign the bill before it reached his desk in early September.
In the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death, Mr. Brown said in his signing statement. I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldnt deny that right to others.

CA has been committing suicide for a long time.
Why not? The entire state is committing suicide with its immigration and Welfare State-on-Steroids policies, so why shouldn’t individuals have the ability to opt out prior to watching the entire ugly mess crash and burn?
The destruction of the cornerstone principle of the American republic.
Right or wrong, there ought not be any involvement by the State. But why would the offender care?
State involvement in this is greasing a very slippery slope.
I do support retroactive abortions for some folks, but I can’t get behind doc assisted suicide.
“Gov. Brown, your Dr.’s on line 2”
This solves one problem. The complaint of the left that capital punishment is cruel, simply use the same drug on the condemn as the government allows for the assisted suicide.
This is practiced in many areas of the world, and as proof it is acceptable, proponents note that no one who followed through on it has ever complained.
I didn’t know 4 others beat them to it.
CA already has physician assisted homocide - they are called nursing homes. I am quite serious, nursing homes in CA will kill you with medication errors and starvation. I have been kicked out of most of them in So Cal with 2 of them calling the cops on me for fighting for patients rights. I had such a reputation the county Ombudsman’s office cold called me offering me a job.
The legislature might have pretended to be agonizing over this, but the people weren't.
You would have thought that something this important would have been put up as a Proposition.
How does a Californian commit suicide?
He goes off iced latte.
Why would they be surprised by droughts, earthquakes and economic collapse?
This is frightening. Physicians are supposed to save lives, it’s part of their oath.
REAL physicians don’t kill people.
Years ago I had a friend who was dying of a particularly horrible untreatable cancer in his sinuses. It was growing into his brain.
His doctor began giving him pain pills before he had significant pain. He told them to accumulate them in case he ever wanted to end it.
