Evidence of New World's oldest decapitation found

Domingo C. Salazar-García, an investigator from Max Planck who did the isotopic analysis on the bones, said the evidence points to a more complex explanation than the result of war or a crime.

The final removal of the head, he said, was not the result of cutting but instead of pulling and rotating until detachment was achieved. And there is no evidence that Burial 26, as the remains have been named, was killed.

"The chemical analysis of strontium isotopes done in this study indicates that the decapitated individual was not an outsider to the group," Salazar-García said. "Therefore, it was probably not a defeated enemy but instead a member of the community."

The researchers propose that the decapitation in Lapa do Santo was part of a broader set of mortuary rituals involving the manipulation of the body. The careful arrangement of the hands over the face is compatible with an important public display in the ritual that could have worked to enhance cooperation within a community.

Acapitation, b-capitation, and c-capitation didn't do the job. Thanks BenLurkin.

I agree with the previous poster who said this exerpt is clear as mud.

The actual research article says right in the abstract that the decapitation occurred as part of "mortuary rituals". He was dead already when they took his head off. link

Wait, the New World had wars between Indians? The liberals said they were pure and peaceful without conflicts. /s

The Libs forgot that the Caribs attacked the Tainos and the Arawaks and had them for dinner.

“And I must say it would “enhance cooperation within a community” as the article proposes. “

It probably took a few members of the community to get it done.

Yes, I agree. My family was Norman, at least as the story goes, so we had not England. This was unfair because Willy was promised it.

What was even more unfair was the heathen Celts in Wales didn't know the Correct Date of Easter so unfair, so we occupied the Vail Of Glamorgan, so they had not an incorrect date to Celebrate the Resurrection.

;’) The British parts of my ancestry appear to be deep Anglo-Saxon (literally, near the Mercia-Wessex interface), and I suspect Celtic, with possible leavening from the wild assortment brought in during Roman times; the Welsh (not sure which kingdom, and for that matter, not sure that’s even true, but then, who would lie about it? That branch vanishes into undocumented a mere four gens back, but I haven’t tried that hard); the Scots (plus I suspect their Pict predecessors, plus another little taste of Roman variety); the Irish; beyond that, could be more.

The only reason I got interested was I wanted to be a part of the oppressed masses slaving away as a serf for an evil frog overlord. I had low self esteem at the time.

After doing some research I found we were the were the evil Frogs and spent our time in England as land owners, merchants, and tradesmen, what a let down.
