Defending his brother's record as president at CNN's Republican presidential debate, Jeb Bush had a simple answer: "He kept us safe."
It's an answer Jeb has given before and that conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer has cited as George W. Bush's main legacy.
But it's not true.
For one thing: The vast majority of people killed on American soil by terrorists throughout the entirety of American history were killed during George W. Bush's administration. It's not even close. And this was followed up by the deaths of an even larger number of Americans during Bush's invasion of Iraq.
It would be a bit of a stretch to say that the thousands of innocent Americans killed on 9/11 were Bush's fault, but it's certainly not to his credit that it happened during his administration, and it's mind-boggling that the Bush family thinks it deserves special credit for its success in keeping the country safe from terrorism when no other administration has presiding over an attack nearly that devastating.

it’s certainly not to his credit that it happened during his administration
who said it was???
confusion or worse....reigns supreme in the world of cheesely urinalism
Jeb, the guy who wants to kiss the butt of foreign invaders lecturing us about safety.
Not another Bush, please God.
Total BS - Clinton totally ignored the Islamic threat and since they only have selective memories, Jimmy Carter was the one who was responsible for it all but promoting radical Islam. I truly believe his hatred of Israel led to all this.
Really? Citing liberal Vox knocking President Bush as a way to bash Gov. Jeb Bush is a low watermark for FR. We can do better.
His brother allowed a nation to become paranoid.
Everyone at Fox gives Carly a winner of the debate.
Donor class paid the pundits not the candidates
She lost and was pushy
and then there’s the whole invasion of Iraq which basically created the circumstances that have lead to the Iranian nuclear deal. Trump was right on target.
Well, considering Vox is to the left of EVERYONE, I’m not too surprised by the title of this column.
I seem to recall Condi, Blair, Bush etc., worrying about Iran in the exact same way we are worrying about it now in early September 2008. Then, some Wall Street friends of the Bush White House pulled the trigger on the stock market on September 11, 2008, and all the Iran worries were swept under the carpet.
It is just Uniparty banter about how Obama has lost the peace. Surely, Jeb’s vaunted “experienced” military advisors who got us into Iraq were smart enough to foresee what Obama would do.
Otherwise, if they didn’t foresee and therefore do things to prevent Obama’s moves, all their experience is meaningless. Uniparty fake outs. War is good for whatever government or party in power.
Rumsfield recently stated the same things Trump said about the war, btw.
His brother gave us Barack Hussein Obama.
And Judas Roberts.
And Obama blames Bush for the economy. Bush was in Charge of keeping us safe. he failed. Jeb does not get a pass on this.
Why is it a problem for Carly Fiorina to be “pushy” but not a problem for Trump to be a rude, insulting asshat?
who is about to give Iran nuclear weapons.
In fact RC one, Vox is to the left of Mother Jones. Interesting reading habits you have there.
can you elucidate ?
Boy, i tend to agree on that one.
Or maybe if we kept 15000 troops there, we would have been feared and over 30 or 40 years very good things could have happened.
We left them in Germany, Japan, Korea...I dont know.
