Francesco Bove is lucky to be alive.
The 62-year-old artist was so viciously mauled by two pit bulls in the Bronx on Friday that a priest read him his last rites outside a church, CNN reported.

Exactly right.
Did you watch a different video?
The video on The Blaze of the attack showed many people trying to help the man.
I don't know what the Youtube video shows because I can't view it without an account there. Is it the same video? If it doesn't show people trying to help him, then it's not the same one.
In The Blaze video, one man is standing over the victim trying to protect him from the dogs, another man tries to beat the dogs with a chain, another tries spraying them with a hose, and all the while someone is calling 911 for help.
Looks like another racial assault using a vicious animal.(It is reported the owner dropped the leash after an exchange of words.)
Chet was right. They are a dangerous, dangerous breed- no matter how they are raised.
Later
“The video on The Blaze of the attack showed many people trying to help the man. “
Well yes and no. During the incident several folks were making futile efforts to repel the dogs. Afterwards the victim was left alone to pick himself up off the street and move once again by himself to the sidewalk. He had bleeding that needed immediate attention and more than likely was going into shock. Both of these could prove to be fatal. Someone should have been providing first aid.
All terriers are bred to kill mammals. The bigger the terrier the bigger the prey. Pits are also super intelligent and can work together better than some people. To think that you can change any part of a dog’s breeding by loving it enough and treating it well is nothing more than projecting human emotions onto a dog. I have witnessed two horrific attacks. In both cases the pit wagged it’s tail prior to the attack because it was doing it’s job.
With that said, of course there are wonderful pits who love the world. I still would not trust them with a child.
Now here's what's incredible: what the victim's family has said about the dogs. (For the record, I'm not a fan of pit bulls. I'm just surprised by the family's comment.)
The pit bulls are now in custody of animal control authorities, Markowski said. That worries the Boves, who own a pit bull named Gina as well as five cats. "My father feels terrible that the dogs are probably going to be put to sleep," Anthony Bove said. "The pit bull is not an inherently evil dog. But ... these pit bulls might have been trained as guard or attack dogs. He remembers the dogs licking his blood off the ground. They wanted to finish the job. That's very disturbing to him."
These damn dogs are a menace.
Years ago two of my neighbor’s pits jumped our fence and nearly killed my beagle pup. She survived, but getting them to pay the vet bill was a six month task.
Fast forward 2 decades, living in different town with another pit neighbor. One afternoon as several of us were sitting in the park, this pit who had always seemed friendly, suddenly tore into my corgi, who was napping at my feet. My son and another neighbor tore the pit off...but she’d tasted blood and was a scary dog after that. My corgi survived, lots of vet trips, these neighbors did pay, but did NOT agree to put dog down The owner was evicted after the pit went after another dog.
It’s sad and infuriating to see how many of these dogs are now bred with other breeds...everywhere ..pit mixes.
Agreed. Any large strong dog, some breeds more than others, can be dangerous.
Those dogs should not be allowed in NYC at all. No dogs that an owner can’t control should be in a populated area—and owners can’t control pitbulls. Period.
No, there are lots of popular breeds that aren’t dangerous.
Dangerous breeds are dangerous.
Little dogs bite at an alarming rate. But they’re little. So not “dangerous.”
Our 14 y/o std poodle, Jesse, just died this morning. So the dog thread caught my eye. We’re a wreck.
Related, tattooed renters just moved in behind us with a vicious snarling teeth-showing pit bull that barks at the air. I will not hesitate to kill it “if” it jumps the fence.
That’s right—they’re not.
And, lots of little dogs don’t bite at an alarming rate.
For safety’s sake, my rule might be that an owner can only have a dog with a weight in ounces up to three times his or her IQ.
That would mean an average person could have a dog that weighs up to 19 pounds. A Mensan, 25 or more pounds. Your average punk on the street only 15 pounds.
And yes, that means someone would set out to breed the nastiest toy breeds possible, but at least they could do less damage.
It’s just a misunderstood breed. /s

Say nothing. Be friendly. Tell ‘em the libs down the street are dog haters. Make a Prestone marinade.
Note to self: Avoid black guys with pitbulls. Cancel walking tour of NYC neighborhoods.
