Meteorite-hunting scientists stunned by crowd-funding support after government grants dry up

A group of scientists who travel to the Nullarbor to collect meteorites have received thousands of dollars from the public after they were unable to secure a government grant for their research.
Since 2007, when PhD student Alastair Tait and his team from Melbourne first began their 3,400-kilometre road trips to the desert, they claimed to have found more than 20 per cent of Australia's recorded meteorites.
Their research findings have been published in international journals, including Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta and Meteoritics and Planetary Science.

I think this is an excellent funding source rather than all the problems associated with government grants. Let those who are interested fund your research. Of course some science is far too expensive for crowd funding.

I like this funding method. I read archaeology news and routinely come across the demand for more gubmint funding: "This work is so important, without funding our life's work/this critical piece of history will be in jeopardy...
And I always think that if it's so important, work for free, pay your own way and solicit funding through private channels.

The best funding source is to make the hunts self sustaining.
Sell an occasional meteorite. The going price is
$1,000 per gram for an average meteorite. There’s about 28 grams in a pound.
