The US dentist whose killing of Cecil the lion fuelled a global backlash has emerged for an interview and says he will return to work on Tuesday.
Walter Palmer has disputed some accounts of the hunt, expressed agitation at the animosity directed at those close to him and says he will be back at work within days.
Palmer, who has spent more than a month out of sight after becoming the target of protests and threats, intends to return to his suburban Minneapolis dental practice on Tuesday.
In an interview on Sunday conducted jointly by The Associated Press and the Minneapolis Star Tribune that advisers said would be the only one granted, Palmer said again that he believes he acted legally and that he was stunned to find out his hunting party had killed one of Zimbabwe's treasured animals.
"If I had known this lion had a name and was important to the country or a study obviously I wouldn't have taken it," Palmer said.

I agree. I have been on lots of hunts with my husband. Yes he was always looking for the biggest one, so I guess that made them trophy hunts. None of the meat was left on the ground. We either took it all home for the freezer or someone else took it home. Except for the bear, even our Indian guides wouldn’t eat the Bears.
I don't like his chances.
“I agree with you wholeheartedly. He is scum. And now I just read that there is only a 5% chance that Cecils offspring will not be killed by a rival male. So big brave Dr. Jerk actually killed like 7 lions, 6 of them babies. Big man, huh? I hope he never has another peaceful day in his life.”
I didn’t realize this guy had committed such a terrible crime against humanity. It sounds like he is worse than ISIS and has massacred innocent human lives.
I thought he had only killed a lion (for which he paid a lot of money into a poor area).
Maybe he will be righteously caught and sent to Guantanamo.
I also think that many of them believe that other people see their activity as an activity that presents great risk for the hunter. But, I don't think most people are fooled. Maybe if they changed the sport such that half the time the large trophy animal died and half the time the hunter died. That might be more impressive. Or, how about creating big game hunting zones and declaring them to be "free fire" zones where hunters would be free to fire at anything that moved, including other hunters? Now, there's a sport!
I really have no objection to hunting by people who eat what they kill. I did some of that when I was younger. Most people understand that.
But, this killing of a really beautiful creature like a lion for no sensible reason is what people find offensive. It's all so gratuitous. Similarly, most people have a hostile reaction to those who torture small animals just for fun. It's just very hard to explain some desires.

I hunted some back in the day. I ate what I killed.
When you are on safari, you know what you are allowed to kill.
I wonder why people pay for guides, then.
Wasn't there a picture showing Palmer smiling as he poses with the lion after shot?
That lion ripped other lions and other animals to bits.
It really doesn’t matter what he does with the lion. If his hunt has a net good, as you agree, then whatever is done with the carcass is his business. Not so much for those who hide behind social specialization for their needs or wants and moralize over other’s choices.
They’re about the size of shock collars for dogs if the pictures online are accurate.
OK, point given. However, it does not follow that he was actually “paying to hunt down and kill a famed lion called Cecil” (to quoute the article given). This still does not make the case of his guilt.
Bingo. Amen. Well said.
I shall refer the experts on the ‘anti’ side to this post.
Oh, I don’t know about that. Following spoor into heavy cover and looking for a wounded lion with a bow takes a certain courage that just plain money can’t buy. Hemingway and other Africana authors wrote of it often. A great many animals have been wounded by “hunters” only to run amok later from the pain and conditioning of their wounds.
Don’t be surprised. Most of them have no bio and many are recent while others are silent until lefty issues arise.
Do you kill what you eat today or do you just pay an unseen killer to do it for you? Are you sure the animal dies in a nice, humane and tidey way?
Becasuse most African countries are dirt poor and it is desperately needed revenue. Furthermore, it pays for the real world, boots on the ground, conservation programs and personnel that protects the other animals - something all of the animal rights activists here and elsewhere do not do.
Really, pretty pathetic.
