Devon Still, whose daughter Leah's battle with cancer captified a nation, was released by the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported according to a source informed of their plans.
The organization showed a lot of compassion in how they handled Still's status throughout the last year. But the cold reality of NFL rosters caught up to him Saturday. The 2012 second round pick has been on the roster bubble for a while now, starting last year on the team's practice squad.
Still did not get much attention as a free agent this offseason, ultimately re-signing with the Bengals. He was beat out by Brandon Thompson in a battle to back up Geno Atkins at defensive tackle.
Leah Still celebrated her last day of radiation in July and her cancer is currently in remission. The Cincinnati Enquirer notes that because Devon Still was on the roster last year, Devon and Leah Still have five years of NFL health insurance regardless of his status.
The Bengals have a particularly deep defensive line and it would not be a surprise at all if Still winds up on another NFL roster shortly.
Football is a business. They are not a charity and that is why both he and Tebow were released. Two great guys with interesting stories, but football is a business. That is the bottom line. Maybe they could start a program where just good honorable guys are chosen....that might be interesting. Good possible business for those that need something to do.
Yup - no one can fault the Bengals here. They went above and beyond and turned the image of their franchise around in the process. They’re just loaded on the DL. Steelers need depth - go get him!
Go drown some puppies now. :) No, I’m just kidding. I KNOW what you say is the truth. But it still sucks.
53 men isn’t a lot. not in football.
But as everybody does make a fortune, they should take care of their own in this situation with the child.
It does stink. And I promise not to rag on him if Pitt does pick him up (said as we prepare for another 5-11 Browns season)
He was always a marginal NFL caliber player. The Bengals kept him last year so his insurance would cover Leah’s bills.
He was the defensive player of the year in the Big 10,a first team AA, and a 2nd round pick. I don’t consider that marginal.
Sounds like words coming from a bitter buckeye. You going to have the refs steal another game from PSU this year like last year - when you shouldn’t have been anywhere near the playoff if there was a level playing field?
Has nothing to do with Big Ten football. His college credentials and second round status could not help him compete on the pro level. As a Penn State fan are you entirely certain you want to get into this pissing contest?
OT: Looks like your guys are in for a loooong year.
OC needs to go tomorrow. I like Franklin, but this was always my concern.
